First Test- India V Australia, Chennai

The start of a massive year for Australian cricket starts in a notoriously difficult place, the final frontier, India. Its going to be dry, dusty, slow and low, all the things we love about cricket on the subcontinent. Australia will take heart in the thumping they inflicted on the Indians over here a few summers ago and the relative ease with which England handled the Indian spinners but we are all well versed in the struggles our own batsman have against the turning ball.

The two teams meet in a relatively similar state, past champions haven't been replaced and although good players have been found, for India in the batting and Australia's fast bowlers it still remains to be seen how they will go long term on the international stage.

The Aussies named their lineup a few days out from the test, not surprisingly playing to our fast bowling strength, the impressive Bird has missed the XI for the reverse swinging Mitch Starc and bowling all rounder Henriques debuts at 7 after impressing in the warm up fixtures

Australia: 1 David Warner, 2 Ed Cowan, 3 Phillip Hughes, 4 Shane Watson, 5 Michael Clarke (capt), 6 Matthew Wade (wk), 7 Moises Henriques, 8 Peter Siddle, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 James Pattinson, 11 Nathan Lyon

India will look to take advantage of Australia's fragility against spin, the only team news coming out is that Harbhajhan Singh will play test number 100 after an extended period outside the team. Ishant Sharma looks to be the lone seamer in a spin heavy attack

India: (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 M Vijay, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 Virat Kohli, 6 Ravindra Jadeja/Ajinkya Rahane, 7 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Pragyan Ojha
    (stolen from cricinfo)

Not a blade of grass on the Chennai wicket, it should be turning from ball one, the toss is huge as I wouldn't want to be chasing any sort of total. Smart money is on India at home, especially with the limited preparation some of our batsman have had.

Cannot figure out what four seam bowlers are going to bring to the side... One of the more mind boggling decisions I have seen.

Expect Clarke and Warner to bowl a heap of overs this test. Have to win the toss and bat first to be any chance IMO.

Which will probably ruin Clarke's back for the series which means not only will we lose our best batsman, but easily our best player of spin. Good times!

For a dour battler Cowan sure does throw his wicket away playing the big shots.

He's like Langer but with 1/3rd of his talent. Lang was a hugely underrated opener - he hung in and grafted when needed, and he bludgeoned at a run a ball when the opportunity presented itself. Cowan just not at that level I'm afraid.

Yeah Langer was regularly the more aggressive opener in the partnership in the latter years. For a player who's supposed to be so committed to his cricket Cowan doesn't seem to know his own game at all. He's a grafter who doesn't have enough talent to be a Test batsmen, so needs to play within himself to maximise his limited ability. It seems he's the only one that doesn't understand that.

Yet his best innings, that century at the Gabba was at a decent click and a relatively aggressive knock, particularly early on.

And a good knock it was too. Unfortunately with his limited ability it's not an approach that's going to deliver consistent results.

                  Watson gone.

This is a huge partnership for Australia in the context of this innings, need a big score from both Warner and Clarke.

Well scratch that, Warner gone 2 overs later. Lots of pressure on Wade now.

Clarke is nearing 100 and Henriques has validated Mark Waughs man crush is on 60.

Gee Clarke has been hitting the ball well.

                              Pardon? That's a bit silly, isn't it.

Yours, along with Sedat's commentary on Cowan is pretty spot on for mine.

Clarke is an out and out gun. I gathered respect for him probably a couple of years prior to his run into form, because he seemed to be the only bat we had that truly respected his wicket.
                              TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.
