In my opinion a few guys are batting for their future and at 3 for 50 a couple of them have fallen short.

Tend to agree...Watson being at the front of the queue. Out playing a very ugly and unnecessary shot.

The Aussie batters are not up to it.
No foot movement is commiting cricketing suicide on this track.
Watson's shot ( I think he thought he was playing on the Adelaide Oval)
          Yes, and he's captain ?

Tough, tough pitch to be making those sorts of decisions on. Do agree Watson's shot wasn't good enough

I think it was the first test when I said the pitch was fine and defended it.

              This is a shocking.

The top order has had all series to show they have the technique, temperament and grit to handle difficult pitches and they have come up short time and time again. The bowlers have actually applied themselves better with the bat than the top order.

Difficult conditions were expected and yet the guys simply haven't knuckled down and grafted their runs.

I think we cut them too much slack at times.

And it's day 3. Imagine if this game reached day 5

Warner has too many credits in the bank to drop, Cowan shouldn't be in the team but who replaces him, Khawaja perhaps? Hughes has copped some shocking decisions including today's and I still think he is a super talent, Watson should make way, Steve Smith has improved his reputation on the trip (probably the only player to do so) and Maxwell shouldn't be in the team.

So I'd say the openers are safe, largely due to a lack of better options (unless we play Khawaja up there), you could make a case for Hughes being left out in place of perhaps Doolan but I think he is far and away a more talented player and Watson should be left out for probably Joe Burns. Does Smith play in England? He has made a decent case but if its horses for courses probably not.

Its a case of no worthwhile options in the sheds, George Bailey has averaged 19 in the Shield, Burns has averaged 32, Doolan 43, Ferguson 39, Forrest 20.

Id be interested to see your lineup GVG

I think you have nailed it. Cowan, Watson and Maxwell shouldn't have been in the side today for a variety of reasons.
We played four openers in the Test and yet moved Maxwell to the top of the order for the 2nd innings which is perplexing.
We probably would have played Smith a test earlier if the selectors had summed up the conditions better.
I'm not sure that Warner should have a lot of credits left because he isn't prepared to graft his runs. The best stroke players in world cricket typically have sound defensive techniques.
I think Warner has the right technique but is he applying himself to the conditions and what is required of him? I don't think he is.

To me, Smith along with Clarke have the best ability to play spin bowling. I'm pleased that Smith has applied himself but he's not yet a number 5 at this level and would be better suited to batting at 6.

Khawaja probably deserves his chance but from all reports he isn't switched on and hasn't quiet worked out that he can't afford to be lax in the field. We can't have half arsed players.

Doolan is the sort of number 3 we should have looked at for this series. Burns looks to be a beautifully balanced player.
Mitchell Marsh makes too many low scores mixed in with the good ones but might make a fine batting all rounder.

I'm not quite sure how we should look for the Ashes tour just yet but it would be something like this for me.

                      Cowan, Warner Hughes
                      Clarke, Smith, Doolan and Burns/Khawaja

                      Wade, Haddin

                      Lyon, Ahmed
Pattison, Siddle, Starc, Bird and Harris

If we go with a 17 man team then maybe Henriques

An average of 35 is the benchmark to get into the side as a specialist bat.
