Shane Watson stands down from Vice Captaincy

Shane Watson yesterday advised Cricket Australia of his decision to stand down from his role as vice-captain across all formats.

Commenting on the decision, Watson said: “Making the decision to step down wasn’t easy but it’s something I’ve been thinking about since the Test series against India ended.”

“I think it’s the right time for a change for both the team and me. I’ll be honest and admit I wrestled with the decision for some time, however once I made up my mind, I informed Cricket Australia so the selectors could consider their options for the Ashes given the squads will be announced soon.

“I want to be the best Test player I can be for Australia and think I can do that by stepping down from the vice-captaincy to focus my attention on scoring runs, taking wickets and doing whatever is necessary to help the team achieve success. I won’t be the vice-captain in title but I think I can still be a leader and strong contributor around the group.

“Yesterday I rang John Inverarity, Mickey Arthur and Michael Clarke to advise them of my decision and they respect that decision and agree with me that this is the best outcome for me and the team.

“I thank Cricket Australia for the leadership opportunity over the past two years and I’m really looking forward to this next phase. In my conversations with Mickey and Michael I reaffirmed my commitment to the team and support for them as we fight to win back the Ashes and get back to being ranked number one in the world,” Watson said.

Cricket Australia National Selector John Inverarity said:

“Shane Watson should be commended for making the tough call to step down from the vice-captaincy to focus on playing. Regardless, he will still be an important senior leader within the team.

“The National Selection Panel (NSP) will now consider and then put a vice-captaincy recommendation to the Cricket Australia Board for its approval.”

The timing of the Ashes squad announcement is yet to be confirmed.

Not sure who replaces him, perhaps Wade or Warner?

I'd say he has read the signs and jumped early.

I still struggle to see why we would accept him as a player given his form has been so poor and the manner he departed the Indian tour but I could never accept that should be in any leadership position of an Australian side.

I think this is a media thing to provide him with a soft landing so the selectors now have some scope to keep picking him as a regular player in the various forms of the game.

      As for a replacement?
In my opinion neither Wade nor Warner inspire a lot of confidence because their form is so inconsistent and especially because of the ongoing injury concerns with Clarke.

Still leaning towards having Bailey in the side as the VC but acknowledge his batting isn't of the quality required. Our depth is being tested at the moment.

Talk it may be given to Haddin, this is ridiculous

          That would be ludicrous

There was an article on the weekend that floated his name but the point was that there isn't a lot of candidates.

I think CA is looking at Ed Cowan as the VC

I have it coming from this Dan Brettig article (who I do have a lot of time for)
              http://www.espncricinfo.com/the-ashe...ry/631745.html

Australia's selectors are expected to name Brad Haddin as Michael Clarke's vice-captain and No. 1 gloveman for the tour of England, reverting to the leadership duo that delivered a 4-0 hiding of India on home soil two summers ago.

An Ashes squad of 16 is set to be revealed on Wednesday in Sydney, with Haddin's return to a post he has held sporadically in the past forcing a change in the wicketkeeping hierarchy. The younger keeper Matthew Wade will again be held in reserve after a year in the Test side, though both will be in the tour party. Wade has the chance to force his way into the XI as a batsman.
