I'm not sold on the test attack anymore. We went from 4 quality bowlers (Ashes) to 2. None of Tait, Johnson or Hogg can be relied on. For my mind Noffke seems like someone who could be a reliable bowler (not a five runs an over bowler) and Cullen might as well play because Indians struggle against offspin more than leggies (i class chinamen as a leggies) and he has the potential to be playing in 3 years time. Noffke will also offer more than Hogg did with the bat. That will mean 3 bowlers and Symonds who should play well with an investment in the future.

Johnson won't be dropped however and while it would be unfair to him to be dropped i think it should happen.

Your thoughts?

PS. On a good note White bowled today for the first time in a match since his injury. 4 overs for 23 runs

I can't see us going in with four quicks in Adelaide. I would suggest that Tait will be dropped for Hogg but like you I'm far from convinced that it is a positive selection for us. I rate Noffke but I don't think he will be selected.

Listless Tait heading to Test oblivion

SHAUN TAIT's first Test in Australia has been less than memorable. So much so he must be wondering if there will be a place for him in front of his home crowd in Adelaide next week.

At the same time Brad Hogg must be a little concerned about getting his spot back, given the selectors have admitted they are considering Victorian leg-spinner Bryce McGain at some stage.

In Perth this week Tait has been the cactus in the school play who somehow managed to miss his cue and forget his lines.

In the first innings he was given 13 wicketless overs out of a total of 98. In the second he was handed only eight overs without success.

That left him with match figures of 0-92 from 21 overs.

Before the Test Ricky Ponting made it clear he would use the super quick in short sharp bursts.

Unfortunately Tait has spent most of the match standing in the wings, shifting weight from one leg to the other.

Yesterday he was given two overs before lunch was taken at 1.30pm and did not get the Kookaburra back into his hand until 4.37pm. And then he was only given three overs.

Tait went to bed at the end of the second day of the match with the horror of a 10-ball over playing on his mind.

He hadn't got near the new ball in the first innings, but Ponting had given him a chance in the ninth over to have a go at the Indian top order after Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Clark. It was not pretty. He tried too hard when the captain gave him the hurry-up to try and squeeze another before stumps. He lost his run-up, overstepped the mark and sprayed wide of the stumps.

Tait has only five wickets in three Tests. He played at Trent Bridge and The Oval in the absence of the injured Glenn McGrath and must have a sneaking suspicion that he is a little cursed as he has never been in a winning Australian Test side. That is some boast in this era.

He also struggled to find that winning feeling when Australia lost four of the first five one-dayers he played.

Tait was included in Perth at the expense of local boy Hogg and will almost certainly suffer the same experience of missing out in front of his home crowd when the Australians take on India in Adelaide next week.

Using four seamers is a gamble the selectors are probably only likely to take in Perth.

Stuart MacGill is still not available for selection in Adelaide. Hogg seems next in line but did not do himself any favours when outbowled by the part-timers in the second innings in Sydney, and there is half a chance the selectors may look to 35-year-old McGain.

McGain has only played 12 first class games for his state, but Ponting admitted recently that his name has been raised among selectors.

Dan Cullen is the new Nathan Hauritz. Why people are constantly bringing his name forward for selection is baffling. When he has even a minor impact at domestic level then we can start talking about him.

Personally if we were going to play 4 quicks I would prefer to bring in someone who can swing the ball.

Dan Cullen is the new Nathan Hauritz. Why people are constantly bringing his name forward for selection is baffling. When he has even a minor impact at domestic level then we can start talking about him.

I have no problem with selectors prompting someone new if he has little or no record at domestic level if they are going to rise to test level.
Both Warne and S Clark had done bugger all at domestic level prior being picked.

Too true. Guys like Brett Lee bowl better at test level than domestic level so it's about ,as you said, who can rise.

And didn't Dan capture the most first class wickets one season for Pura Cup, or at least, close to it? (Could easily be confused)

I don't think so, but i think he won the Bradman young cricketer of the year or something.

Remember he's young and not every spinner can just do well like Warne. Will be interesting to se how he goes at the Junction Oval.

Warne didn't actually just do well. His debut test at the SCG was a long 5 days for the little fat bloke with the tipped mullett. But they perservered with him.
I think it's time to forget Hogg, he's not going to get better than he is.
If there is a spinner they believe is going to be the next test spinner then it might be time to pick him and give him some experience. It's not like the experienced guys are top level.
The issue might be that they don't really believe in any of the young guys.
The loss of Warne has left a huge hole.

It was always going to. Taylor/Waugh/Ponting as skippers were so fortunate to have Warne to throw the ball to.

Yes he struggled for a few tests but it didn't take him long to figure it out. And i meant in terms of age

At his age Warne should have been playing Pura Cup matches but he was the special one.

Do agree with your comments though. Who better to teach a spinner to bowl than the Indians
