    Warner tosses up baseballs

Sydney: Explosive Australian opener David Warner is mulling a baseball trial in the United States where successful hitters can earn millions of dollars a year, a report said on Tuesday.

Warner's manager Tony Connelly told the Sydney Daily Telegraph all options were being considered for a player who has plundered the English bowling in the ongoing Ashes series where he is averaging over 90.

"Dave and I have spoken about it -- it would be interesting to see how he goes," Connelly said of a baseball trial.

"A pitch over the plate is a full toss right in his range but once they start throwing curves, it's a bit different.

"We talked about setting up a trial in the States and getting him in a batting cage just to have a look.

"It was more a fun thing to see how he goes. Right now he's in the middle of an Ashes series and that's his total focus."

Warner's red-hot form in the Ashes series could make him a US$5 million a year player, Connelly said, but this would be nothing to what he could command as a top baseball star.

The left-hander is expected to attract a US$2 million deal at next month's Indian Premier League auction on top of his Cricket Australia contract and ever-increasing endorsements.

In baseball, America's best batters can earn as much as US$20 million a season and the Telegraph said the big-hitting Warner had attracted the attention of baseball scouts.

A number of Australia's greatest crickets in the past played baseball as well. Ian Chappell and Allan Border spring to mind. Border's fantastic ground fielding in the inner circle was finely honed from his baseball background.

Brett Lee was linked too as a pitcher obviously. And if they saw his 6 at the GABBA maybe hitting too.

Obviously not Gilly, but why wouldn't Warner or the equivalent type player at least get a try out ?
Gridiron has had a huge success with our players as punters and the players in the MLB is full of imports.

Lets not forget the obvious link between AFL & Baseball, especially with ex-Bulldogs champion Justin Charles.

Doesn't matter. Just as long as nobody pitches him any curve balls.

Allan Border was good enough as a junior to eventually play nationally and maybe squeeze into the minor leagues in the US.

This is conceivably the stupidest story I've ever read.

But really it's just one non contact position in Gridiron that our players have been able to become effective players in. I'd like to see if our players like Warner could be competitive against ABL players. I think we underestimate how difficult a switch to MLB would be.

One thing he has going for him in baseball is his shortaarsedness. He's listed at 170 cm.

Just incredibly difficult. To try and do it at 27 just out of the blue and succeed would be almost impossible. He would likely be riding buses playing low A ball for almost zero money. Can you see Warner giving up guaranteed millions for that? Story is sensationalist crap written by someone with no conception of the difficulty in doing this. And if Warner's manager seriously thinks this is a potential path I'd be questioning his intelligence and sanity. More likely question is what he trying to use this as leverage for?
