Apologies for the probably uncouth way of going about it, but I still find it in poor taste the way that you sarcastically refer to stress related illness as an excuse with (assumingly) no inside knowledge of the situations of the people involved, regardless of any subjugated knowledge you may have. Even if it is over-diagnosed it still very much exists.

    Anyway; Swann.

Anyone else surprised to hear he'd taken more wickets than anyone else since debuting in 2008?
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Not really. England play an extraordinary amount of Test cricket, far more than any other team. I'd be interested in how many overs he's bowled during that time, it's not inconceivable he's bowled twice as many overs as the second most bowler.

He is retiring at the right time, the ashes are gone he won't be around for the next one so retire and give another young player a chance to get experience in Australia before the next ashes in Oz .
I always wondered why Australia didn't retire a few players earlier, Ponting, Hussey, knowing they weren't going to be around for the ashes.
Australia went to England not quite ready and could easily have won that series if they had retired these guys a bit earlier.

Just compared Swann to Dale Steyn, he bowled more overs since 2008 than Steyn has in his career, despite starting 4 years earlier. Steyn has taken nearly 100 wickets more also.

I can't compare any mental illness and take it lightly. Does anyone remember Trescothick or a bloke who's son now plays for England, Bairstow , he committed suicide soon after his career ended, I met him out here at the sunbury ashes game a few years ago, great bloke had a huge laugh with him, what goes on inside is completely different from what's happening outside.
Please don't make light of mental illness.
Just leaving home can be pressure let alone leaving a country.
Slater is another who fights demons and I'm sure their are a lot more who hide it.

Makes sense his body and his mind are burnt out, it's a shame people take it as easy as taking his bat and ball and going home because they lost a series, I don't believe any player at that level would do that.
                    To get to
That level you have to be driven and the best 15 players in millions in the country, the press disgust me sometimes in the things they write or insinuate and put in people's minds.

Swann has played 60 tests for 255 wickets @ 29.96 and a strike rate of 60.1 since his debut in 2008. That is 4.25 wickets per test

Steyn has played 68 tests for 341 wickets @ 23.07 and strike rate of 42.2 since his test debut in Dec 2004 giving 5.01 wickets per test.

You would always expect slow bowlers to bowl more overs as they are more about working batsman out rather than a blast approach for a fast bowler.

Steyn has been the top rated bowler in the world for a long time, but Swann has been pretty good for England.

Steyne's figures are pretty good. Really impressive. Remarkably close to Denis Lillee- 70 tests, 355 wickets at 23.92.

                            And DK was bloody good.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.
