    Anderson Silva (Spoiler Alert)

Probably the best ever fighter in MMA is Anderson 'The Spider' Silva.

I'm not sure if any one watched UFC 168 today but Silva suffered a terrible injury that should be the finish to his outstanding career.

If you are in any way squeamish I suggest that you don't search the images of this injury.

As I've posted on one or two sites, why is anyone surprised or shocked (not saying you're either, Gary, but many on FB etc. are)?

I get he's a champ and all, but if you keep kicking people in the shin with your shin eventually something bad is going to happen to your shin, especially if you're using ridiculous force like these guys are.
    TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

Jeemak, no doubt it's a brutal sport. They have done well to limit serious injuries but injuries like this to a high profile competitor like Silva will place it under more scrutiny.

It was a legit kick checking technique that caused the leg to break; Weidman said after the fight he specifically worked on checking leg kicks after getting lit up by them in the last fight. It particularly sucks because if he threw weaker kicks instead of his awesome ones he would have been (relatively) fine.

in my opinion it's not a sport along with boxing and should be banned.

I can't be bothered listing all the ways that I take umbrage with your viewpoint so I'll link an article that was written in response to similar claims made by a journo after a recent card in Brisbane which surmises issues with this attitude pretty succinctly.

Note that MMA results in far, far less injuries to its participants than "real" sports do.

I am not going to argue with you, as I said, it's my opinion. perhaps it is a sport because you do have to have skill to smash the shit out of someone. What I should have said is it should be banned as a sport.

Far to early to say that IMO. I don't particular like MMA but I'm not against it.

We'll get real injury reports on a sport like MMA after about 40-50 years of it being a sport.

Hey! One of my friends represented Australia in the beach volleyball at the last Olympics. She's as dedicated as any sportsperson I know and has made more sacrifices then any afl footballer I know.
