    Davis Cup Tennis Thread

Australia's return to the Davis Cup World Group could be a brief one after it trailed France 2-0 after two losses on day one.

Davis Cup: Australia 2-0 down to France after Lleyton Hewitt and Nick Kyrgios both lose

Australia's return to the Davis Cup World Group threatens to be a brief one after Lleyton Hewitt and Nick Kyrgios suffered straight-sets defeats on day one against France.

Exciting teenager Kyrgios started strongly but was outclassed by world number nine Richard Gasquet 7-6 (7/3), 6-2, 6-2 before Hewitt fell to 10th-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7/2).

It left Australia trailing 2-0 in the best-of-five indoor claycourt tie in La Roche sur Yon and needing victory in Saturday's doubles just to keep the encounter alive.

Hewitt will back up for that match alongside Chris Guccione and one of few positives to come out of Friday's session was that the veteran was not kept on court too long.

Backed by an enthusiastic crowd in the western French town, Tsonga was ultra-impressive in securing a win in less than two hours to preserve his record of never having dropped a set to Hewitt.

He shut the Australian out of the match early with a superb display of serving to race to a two-set lead.

In typical fashion, Hewitt tried his hardest to fight back in the third set but Tsonga took the tiebreak comprehensively.

"He was just too good, simple as that," Hewitt said after the loss.

"He served big, hit the ball big from the baseline and even when I had small opportunities he was just very quick to shut them out."

Julien Benneteau and Gael Monfils are scheduled to play doubles for France but Rafter suspects Tsonga may come in for the latter.

Despite the pressure of knowing the tie is effectively sudden death for Australia from now on, Hewitt said he and Guccione would approach Saturday's doubles rubber like any other.

"It's a small step to try and give ourselves an opportunity to go into day three," Hewitt said.

"It's not going to be easy tomorrow, we know that, and they're going to be confident and trying to finish it off.

"But we're prepared and we'll go out there and give it our best shot."

An Australian side missing Bernard Tomic was always expected to struggle against a talent-packed France playing at home and on their favoured surface.

However Kyrgios raised some of hope of an early upset with a bright beginning against Gasquet.

The 162nd-ranked teenager went toe-to-toe with the Frenchman in the first set, holding a 3-1 lead in the tiebreaker before losing six straight points to concede the set.

That appeared to take the spark out of the youngster's game and Gasquet assumed control, closing out the match in just over two hours.

"If I win that first set, a lot of things can happen," Kyrgios said.

"But I can sit here and say a lot of things that could have happened.

"After I lost that first set ... I thought I wasn't even playing that bad but he was just playing some really good tennis."

Australia has returned to the competition's top 16 for the first time since 2007 but a loss would send it back into the World Group playoffs for an eighth straight year.

Lleyton Hewitt hits out at drug testing as Australia falls to France in Davis Cup tie

LLEYTON Hewitt went down fighting on the court, gave the International Tennis Federation drug testing procedures one of the biggest serves of the weekend off it, and refused to answer questions about whether he has played his last Davis Cup match for Australia.

More of an In Bruges guy?

Unbelievable result in the Davis cup today. After losing both singles on day one and replacing both Kyrgios and Kokkinakis as singles players on day three, Groth and Hewitt secured wins to give a 3 - 2 result to Australia. It is the first time Australia has fought back from a 0-2 to win a Davis Cup tie since 1939

With Tomic in a bit of trouble and Kyrgios making some noise that he doesn't want to play Davis Cup there will be a big gap when Hewitt retires.

He always finds something when he plays for Australia. Those young players should learn something from Hewitt instead of being so selfish.

Unbelievable stuff from Groth and Hewitt to rescue the rubber. Probably the biggest comeback since Cash coming from 0-2 v Pernfors to win in the 1987 DC final at Kooyong. I think that was the first time we'd come back from a 1-2 deficit after the doubles to win a final since 1939. That would have been Quist and Bromwich?

Would be brilliant for Hewitt to finish with a Davis Cup win.

Great Britain currently leading 2-1 against France with Reverse Singles to come.

Would be a great result for us for GB to get up.

That's a good point Remi. Hewitt was a real brat.

Massive difference in terms of Davis Cup commitment.

This is not a Greek joke but Kyrgios basically defaulted on day one whining that he didn't want to be there.

Tennis is a bit of a game for narcissists (having played for more than twenty years myself!).

Hewitt may have been an annoying brat, but he didn't use media conferences to air dirty laundry about Tennis Australia. And he absolutely lives and breathes Davis Cup for Australia when it comes around. The kids at the moment just don't care for it in the same way. Although, both Tomic and Kyrgios both remind me of the Scud. Oodles of potential, but too busy indulging themselves right now rather than pushing themselves to be THE BEST and then later enjoying the spoils.
Wake me up when we get to heaven, let me sleep if we're going to hell

Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath

And we all found heaven - 2016 Premiers!

Fun fact: When Lleyton Hewitt first played Davis Cup he had Sandon Stolle as a team mate.

                      How time flies.

But it's ok for Rafter and Co to air dirty laundry? They should know better, yet they don't.

Serious miss management by tennis Australia all round and has been for a number of years. Something just doesn't sit right with me about Rafter.

Granted that Nick K and Bernie T could have handled themselves better, but the whole controversy of Nick K "throwing" the set is the biggest load of rubbish ever and was blown way out of proportion. They way the media and the Australian public carried on they should be ashamed of themselves. And what Bernard Tomic said after his final match at Wimbledon had merit to it. Do you think tennis Australia at the Brisbane international charged Federer or Hewitt pay for court hire and tennis balls?

Hewitt, Fed, Murray, Novak Djokovic all had bratish tendencies and I am sure there are many more examples of young tennis players with great potential acting like spoilt brats.

Tennis just leaves me cold to be brutally honest.
The crowd just laugh at anything and I mean anything, and the players are petulant .
Serena Williams is one of the greatest players ever yet still conducts herself like she's 12.
