    Australia's tour of Pakistan

The squads have just been announced, a few extremely interesting selections

    Test squad

Michael Clarke (c), Alex Doolan, Phillip Hughes, Brad Haddin, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Steve O'Keefe, Mitchell Johnson, Chris Rogers, Peter Siddle, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Shane Watson

    ODI squad

Michael Clarke (c), Sean Abbott, George Bailey, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Johnson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Shane Watson

    T20 squad

Aaron Finch (c), Sean Abbott, Cameron Boyce, Pat Cummins, James Faulkner, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Shane Watson
    Some points I have:
-Looks like with Bailey going they've decided it's time to rebuild the T20 lineup. Sean Abbott is an interesting selection, an absolute Mark Waugh love-child but I haven't seen the potential in him to step up to be honest, kind of like a younger John Hastings

-I'm not a fan of the Marsh selection, they've obviously decided we'll look at playing two spinners, two quicks and Watson/Marsh as our attack but I don't see how he has jumped past Faulkner. He's a supremely talented cricketer but the reality is his first class average sits in the 20's. We've gone an all-rounder too heavy here.

-I like the O'Keefe selection, the word is the only reason he hasn't been picked previously has been 'character differences' but his Shield stats have been outstanding for a long period and he has always outperformed Lyon when they've bowled in tandem. Well done, we desperately need a second spinner to put their hand up

-Chad Sayers has reason to be seriously disappointed after his outstanding Aus A showing, may not be quick but it's hard to say his record doesn't stand up on flat pitches when he plays in Adelaide.

Apparently will appeal on the grounds of a 'medical issue', similar to Murali perhaps?

What's the weather like this time of year? I'm guessing high 40's C. Can't be much fun to play cricket, although humidity would be low. Hope our bowlers have been conditioned well.

Its a great point, been 40's all this week and the October average is mid 30's. I'm interested to see how Mitch Johnson goes, we can't expect him to blow them away on these tracks, Nathan Lyon will be tested far more severely than he was in the Ashes and will bowl to quite a few top order players I'd suggest.

Likelihood of O'Keefe getting selected Lem?

Good to see first class performance getting rewarded.

Then again they did pick Mitch Marsh..

It's well overdue, but I think the horse has bolted. You only need to watch under age cricket to see that chucking is endemic now in the game. There's barely a match that doesn't have a sub-continental kid who literally walks to the wicket of throws an off spinner. Most of them aren't any good, so it's not such an issue, but there's going to be some from time to time who are good and make a farce of international cricket.

                          Re: Australia's tour of Pakistan

What do we think the first test side will look like? The team in the last test v South Africa looked like this:
                          Rogers
                          Warner
                          Doolan
                          Clarke
                          Smith
                          Watson
                          Haddin
                          Johnson
                          Harris
                          Pattinson
                          Lyon

Pending the fitness of Clarke and Watson I'm guessing the only likely changes are going to be 2 of Siddle, Starc and O'Keefe for the injured Harris and Pattinson. Even Watson's biggest haters would struggle to make a case for Maxwell or Marsh over him and none of the other batsmen deserve to be dropped.

In my mind the only real battle is between Starc/Siddle and O'Keefe. There's been some talk of us playing the two all-rounders but I can't see it happening, we look weak with Marsh and Watson in the top 6.
                            I think we'll see:
                            Rogers
                            Warner
                            Doolan
                            Clarke
                            Smith
                            Watson
                            Haddin
                            Johnson
                            O'Keefe
                            Siddle
                            Lyon

I do like the potential for Starc to get it reversing on the rough tracks but it's a big risk playing he and Johnson as the sole specialist seamers, if they spray it we're in trouble so we probably still need the line and length work horse in there. I might have a cheeky flutter on Watson as our leading wicket-taker for the series, he's still our best bowler when it swings.

There is an article on Cricinfo that Watson faces a challenge from Marsh for the test side.

I think Marsh is an an emerging talent but I can't see how he could squeeze Watson out of the test side. Watson is both a better batsman and bowler than Marsh by a fair way and I just can't see the logic in it. As Lem said, there is also some speculation that we could play 2 quick bowlers, 2 spinners and 2 all-rounders. Crazy times.

Would any one really have Marsh in the test side ahead of Watson?
