Remember Stamford bridge having cars parked around the ground in the 90's.
Lived behind the stadium a while ago.
Just a bit different to Footscray

Yep, read that the other day. Some amazing pictures and it always makes me laugh when people say we have no history.

Can't wait to see the next step, with the upgrade of Stamford slowly heading towards approval by the council.

Saw my only EPL match at Stamford Bridge in 2002. Was just after Roman Abramovich had come in and bought the club and a heap of players. Ended in a 2-2 draw with Blackburn if I remember correctly. It was one of the easier EPL grounds in London to get a ticket for at the time.

They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

LOve the availabilty to click from old to new.
Basically they have turned the Whitten Oval into Etihad, great pipe-dream if we had the funds and support to match this.

Why is the ground called Stamford Bridge anyway? The original Stamford Bridge is just outside York.

The name "Stamford Bridge" is one of great significance in English history, being the site in Yorkshire of one the most famous battles of King Harold's reign in 1066 against the Vikings. However it is believed that this is not connected to the naming of the stadium which came about less because of historical significance and more to do with it's geography, local landmarks and a fair degree of chance.

                18th Century Map
Eighteenth century maps show Fulham Road and Kings Road and surrounding areas, including the site of the stadium and also a stream called 'Stanford Creek'. The stream runs along the route of the present day railway line, behind the East Stand and flows down into the Thames.

Where the stream crossed Fulham Road is marked “Little Chelsea Bridge” which was originally called Sanford Bridge (from sand ford). While a bridge over the creek on Kings Road was called Stanbridge (from stone bridge). It seems that these two names of the stream and the bridge, 'Stanford Creek' and 'Little Chelsea Bridge', together evolved into the name Stanford Bridge, which again later evolved into Stamford Bridge as the adopted name of the stadium.

Rumours are next season will be the last at the Bridge as we know it. It will be completely demolished and rebuilt into a sparkly new 60k+ stadium. The firm who designed the Birds nest in Beijing and Allianz Arena in Munich are designing it and teamed with Romans money it's going to be quite the home ground. So we'll be playing elsewhere for a couple of seasons with Twickenham being sounded out for the majority of our home games in that time.

There's no image leaks as of yet(TBA in the close season). But I don't think there would be.

Just wondering why a lot of premier league sides don't have roofed stadiums , soccer would be the benefit, no called off games due to weather no winds, etc ..
Are there any grounds in the divisions that have two clubs at the one stadium ?
Amazing how AfL has cottoned on to roofed stadiums before soccer.

Stadia. Is it a technical problem do they kick soccer balls higher than footys? Because you're right about EPL. If they needed all weather venues anywhere it's there. Maybe it's in the fire regs they bought in after Bradford that they can't have roofs on the venues or something.

But Wembley has a roof it can use doesn't it?

At the race track? You could lay out a pitch in the middle.

The home of Union, a 80k seat stadium.
