And Kelly. If all the other clubs spread big offers across most of the guns in that list either the players accept much less money, or if the players want the cash then GWS lose two, maybe three of them. Which is good for the other clubs, and yes GWS do get more first round picks. But if the first rounders keep walking out (Boyd, McCarthy, Treloar, Jaksch, O'Rourke and the dozen at Carlton) then when Patful, Lids, Shaw, Muzungu, DeBoar, Mummy, Gryphone etc are all gone (or completely ineffectual) then it becomes a problem for them. Ideally the competition can turn them into a feeder club like it did with the GCS.

If the rest of the competition approached it strategically they could systematically weaken their likely strongest competitor by offering big money deals to player after player as they come out of contract. GWS would either lose the player, overpay to keep them meaning they'll eventually struggle to retain most of the future players coming out of contract, or try to convince some of their players to stay for less while theirs mates leave for more money.

The problem is there's rabble clubs like Carlton and Richmond who'll keep throwing out generous deals to fringe GWS players hoping to snare a bargain, which they won't, but in turn keep topping up GWS' draft picks and clearing salary cap space taken up by 3-5 year players with minimal upside, with no associated pain in the process. So effectively they ensure GWS will always be stronger than them, and in turn potentially stronger than team like us. The AFL really needs a second division for dud clubs so they don't stink up the good teams.

          AFL article

Btw, Who do we push out to make room for Shiel or/and Kelly? Our current strengths are our midfield players and all of them are still quite young and developing.

I don't think we need Shiel but we may want to reunite Kelly with Bont for them to play in a Premiership together

Kelly would be my target, but GWS would be reluctant to trade him, let alone to their strongest competition. We have cap space, so it's a matter of draft picks ideally but a player could be added in via a third club. An elite mid with elite disposal and elite endurance has a spot in our team.

If you watch the PF again, have a look just before the Tom Scully/JJ missed 50m penalty and have a look at the sizzling pass from Zac Williams to Scully. I would love that delivery off our half back line.
