For reasons to do with the salary cap clubs aren't allowed to have captain coaches anymore. It's actually against the rules. Malcolm Blight will be the last ever captain coach of a League football club

What happens to all Essendon's best laid plans, if nobody bothers to apply. You can have all the best thought out selection criteria, and all best selection processes; but it all falls down if nobody wants the job.

I guess they will settle for the default option, James Hird.
