'Look out, we're coming': Port plans premiership party

They've blooded a lot of young kids in the past couple of years. I rate their defence, even accounting for Dan Houston's move into the midfield in 2020. Teams with a lot of kids can fall away late in the season though. It's a brutal game.

Great to have a target, after all shouldn't every team be aiming for the premiership.

Doesn't Hinkley have the additional concern of just keeping his job.

He needs them up and firing early or he might not last beyond the bye.

I don’t know why but I like this. They’re a talented group and should be feeling themselves.

What they choose to do with themselves should stay in the club house and not aired in public.

They had a ping at topping up and it backfired so in in the 2018 and 2019 drafts they went hard at getting early picks even moving on Wingard to achieve that.

Would we be bold enough (or stupid enough) to put our expectations into the media knowing that those words could come back to bite us?

It's a ballsy move but they should be a strong side this year

                I'm happy with not.

Remember Smorgon did that in 2010 and put Rocket under pressure

It's all well and good to back yourselves in but Port have been the most disappointing underachiever of the past 5 years. They really only had one good year under Hinkley and fell away afterwards.

My thoughts exactly. Bold words for a bloke on his last legs at Port.

I'm not sure it's either bold or stupid.

I think everyone sees it for what it is. A coach talking up his group in the pre-season and saying that we aren't going to settle for 2nd prize...it just feels like pretty empty rhetoric to be truthful.

Now, if El Presidente had come out and said "I have informed Ken and the Match Committee on behalf of the board that if our club is NOT playing on Grand Final day 2020, that they can all find themselves alternate employment...and they can take the players with them" then THAT would be something...and THAT would create pressure.

The coach saying it doesn't even raise an eyebrow does it?
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

I can imagine the SA media in particular will remind him of it after every loss if it looks like they won't make the finals.
It's going to put a lot of pressure on Hinkley if they get off to a slow start.

I suspect he might not even coach out the season if they lose a few early and the statement keeps haunting the club but congrats to them for setting the expectations

Didn't Schwab try the same thing at Hawthorn shortly before they had a horror season resulting in a spoon and a coach sacking?

I think so, it could very well be a testing time early for Hinkley
