    AFL - It's a strange world

    Footy is a funny world.

Geoff Walsh goes into North Melbourne to oversee a review that leads to David Noble’s sacking.
Only weeks later, Noble appointed to a panel to review St Kilda that finds it needs a senior leader and the club settles on… Geoff Walsh

    From the fin article:

“How was it, precisely, that Essendon secured Thorburn’s services? Melbourne’s Herald Sun reported on August 27 that Thorburn had been engaged by Essendon to “conduct an independent review … which will focus on”, among other things, “the appointment of a new CEO”.

That’s right, Thorburn did at Essendon Football Club in 2022 precisely what David Gonski did at the Future Fund in 2012 and what Dick Cheney did in 2000 as chairman of George W. Bush’s vice-presidential search committee: he used his position as the headhunter to win the job for himself.

Thorburn even interviewed other (unsuspecting) candidates for the role – memorising the best parts of their pitches, no doubt! – before declaring himself a candidate. How is that ethical?!”

Seems business as usual for the industry…

Just, just a pair of amazing coincidences. I mean, what are the chances?

He had himself appointed CEO last year in support of the three CEOs they've burned through recently due to the COVID crisis anyway. He's doing a great job.

I think they might be keeping clear of Christians this time round.

That's not the Essendon way. Right now a committee should be forming to reappoint Thorburn

                  Nothing wrong with Christians.

I'm torn on this one, religious freedom is a thing and it's ok to have differing views. The outrage was pretty over the top.

I get the views were more extreme, and I certainly don't subscribe to them however we were howling about Jones' anti vax stance 18 months ago and now he's included with open arms (rightfully).

This is going to get me to the nets for sure

Quite apart from the bigotry stuff, how could he be appointed to this job (or any job) after being absolutely fried by the banking royal commission? Consequences?

Once you reach a certain echelon the mud has trouble sticking. I've no doubt he'll continue to fail upwards.

I'm very excited to see you back, Murph, one of my favourites.

Yes that report was pretty scathing of NAB and their practises.

I find that part more astounding as they actually were well aware of it.

I read through the process and the board said legally they couldn't approach the religious component of his application but was happy they took action on it promptly when they became aware of it.
I see there is no winners in this. Religion, Politics and Sport just don't mix that well together.

I don't agree with Damian too many times, but this is something Essendon need to think about.

BARRETT CALLS FOR ESSENDON PRESIDENT TO “STAND DOWN” AFTER CEO DISASTER

The new President didn't exactly paint himself with glory during his first press conference either.

I think he's right on the money with this suggestion. There will be more to play out.
