2023 AFL Ladder projector

It's early days but I'm interested to read your thoughts on how the top 8 might look at the end of the H&A for the 2023 season?

My predictions are:

1/ Melbourne
2/ Geelong
3/ Richmond
4/ Brisbane
5/ Western Bulldogs
6/ Sydney
7/ Carlton
8/ Fremantle

9/ Collingwood
10/ Port Adelaide
11/ StKilda
12/ Gold Coast Suns
13/ Essendon
14/ Greater Western Sydney
15/ Adelaide
16/ West Coast
17/ Hawthorn
18/ North Melbourne

Essentially for me it's Carlton in and Collingwood out of the 8.

Even with Walsh missing early in the season I can't see why Carlton couldn't make a strong run at it.
Port are motivated to improve this year and could surprise.
The Suns should be right in the mix as well.

Clarkson won't make that much of a difference to North in terms of wins and Hawthorn will struggle big time. Mitchell must be confident of his coaching position to allow so many players to depart.
Not sure what to make of West Coast. Essendon will need another season before they get better.

Ladder Predictors are so difficult at this point as it is not possible to really see how teams will gel.

At this point last year, did anyone realistically see Collingwood being top 4 or even a finals chance. Even Sydney as a top 4 hope was an extreme position and of course all the media saw Essendon as finals bound.

Did anyone see Geelong as virtually unbeatable late in the year when the older players were supposedly going to drop off.

My predictor is Bulldogs top 2 and it is there own fault if they don't achieve it.

There are 17 other positions for the rest of them. However I would see Hawthorn as a bottom 4 lock and probably wooden spoon favourite.

As with every new season, there are question marks about most teams. My questions are in bold. Most BF punters do not think we will make the 8 FWIW.

1/ Melbourne - Will the 2 rucks work? Which tall forward will kick goals for them?
2/ Geelong - People say this with every new recent season, the Cats old players will fall off the cliff. Is 2023 that year?
3/ Richmond - The two new Giants mids will help, but they will be fielding old and banged up versions of Martin, Cotchin and Riewoldt
4/ Brisbane - mjp posted a good analysis about the reality of a poor structure
5/ Western Bulldogs - OK we got Jones and Lobb, but how do we stop second half collapses and opposition mids running straight through us?
6/ Sydney - How will they recover after that GF loss? Reid is fragile, Franklin is on his last legs, so who are their key forwards?
7/ Carlton - should improve and make the finals, but will 2023 be one step forward or two steps back after 2022?
8/ Fremantle - IIRC, Freo lost at least 3 very good players but gained Jackson. Who will be their tall forwards?

Where do you think we will finish?

Regarding the team I had ahead of us:

I think the two ruck set-up will work for Melbourne. Hunter will improve and they have a lot of emerging players and such a strong midfield.
Geelong are still a very strong side. I don't think they've controlled things well but might miss Selwood more off the field than on it.
Richmond will have a better version of Martin who battled through injuries and the loss of his father. The two GWS mids will help them a lot.
Brisbane are pretty strong all over the park and I don't see them sliding much. Dunks will add grunt and Zorko will be fitter as well

Where do you think we will finish?

I have thought about your question for a few days.

Initially I was over the moon about getting Lobb and Jones, and I think we can cover the loss of Dunkley.

Upon further thought, I remembered our poor forward entries, poor midfield defence and teams running through us and our second half collapses in key games over the last 2 seasons.

We need to fix the causes of these things for 2023. If we can, then we are a chance - we have the talent.

If we don't, then we will finish like we did in 2022 or even miss the finals.

It's always a fun exercise to reflect on.

I really haven't paid too much attention to any 'news' coming out of other clubs, but...


1. Brisbane - on paper, their main weakness is now a strength.
2. Geelong - they just don't slide, maybe if I predict they'll finish high, they'll finally, finally slide.
3. Carlton - love their list build. their keys are excellent at both ends and their mids are strong.
4. Western Bulldogs - no more excuses. might even be disappointed with 4th.
5. Melbourne - they add Grundy but does that make them better? potential to fall further.
6. Richmond - two big additions in the midfield could propel them higher, but do have some on decline.
7. Sydney - they probably finish higher than this, but a slight drop off wouldn't surprise.
8. Collingwood - similar to Sydney, good club who may find a way, but probably lack real high end star power.

9. Fremantle - how do they score?
10. Gold Coast - it's a tough comp but if they miss finals again, it's a fail.
11. Port Adelaide - will have their moments but I can see them falling even further if Boak/Wines drop off. Dixon is cooked.
12. Adelaide - maybe a little high but they are young and compete (mostly) well.
13. St. Kilda - save for Lyon, they are unimpressive and especially if Max is injured.
14. Essendon - who?
15. GWS - losing two of their best mids will hurt.
16. West Coast - hard to place, unlucky with injury last year but their stars are mostly at/near the end.
17. North Melbourne - should improve but doubt that improvement speaks to actual wins yet.
18. Hawthorn - did somebody say pain?
