Sharks and Stingrays were the other 2 nicknames that were shortlisted.

Sharks was ruled out due to licencing problems - Greg Norman owns the rights to any clothing with Shark branding in Australia.

Stingrays was ruled out due to the association with Steve Irwin and his untimely passing, as well as some licencing issues.
      Footscray member since 1980.

The logo reminds me of an ANZAC badge.

Considering the last club to enter was called the Power, took 13 years to get a decent jumper and have the worst club "song" in history they've done comparatively well, although to be honest it's all ok in a pretty bland way.
          Now hopefully they suck forever.

I wish I could say that that's the worst jumper I've ever seen,
but unfortunately, and unbelievably there have been worse.

            Still, they are absolutely repulsive.

I don't understand why they chose red, yellow and blue when Brissy colours are maroon, yellow and blue. Not much "brand differentiation" there, surely, for the two Queensland clubs?

I agree, the home strip just looks like a training jumper, and the wave on the other two, well, that is just hidious.

I am glad they didn't use sharks...as you point out there are a few of those around already.

But then I like 'Dockers' because it has local meaning (though they were always 'wharfies', not really 'Dockers'), just as I like the Packers and the Steelers in the NFL. I don't like the Power because it means nothing and doesn't end in the letter "S"...though for those baseball fans ending in an 'X' is acceptable.

They had an opportunity to go down the surfing track and open themselves up for non-traditional sporting goods apparel sponsorship through the likes of Quicksilver had they really embraced it...Now, they are just in with the rest of the pack, no new colors, unremarkable logo...meh.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

Agreed ... the Gold Coast Surfers would have been a great play on words

Hows this for a jumper design ???

Haha now we're talking Scraggers...that wouldve been awesome. I agree with others here though that the jumpers are way too plain and bland and the "suns" is way too predictable to me.
I will never see #16 the same!!

Seems I'm not the only one:

Suns rise could be a false dawn amid army logo clash

Gary Ablett with the two logos.

THE Gold Coast AFL team could be asked to prove its logo is not a rip-off of the Australian Army's iconic Rising Sun badge after two high-profile veterans expressed their concern about an apparent link between the images.

Ironically, the club did not use its preferred Sharks option because it feared golfer Greg Norman's trademark Great White Shark presented potential legal hurdles.

However, former RSL president Rusty Priest and NSW politician Charlie Lynn, who regularly leads treks to the Kokoda Track to help educate people about the the sacrifices of the Diggers, said the Rising Sun emblem was sacred to all Australians and its likeness should not be used by a football team.

The team's nickname, The Suns, could be interpreted as further proof the team's logo is a hybrid of the famous badge worn by Australian troops into military campaigns since the Boer War.

I dont see how the Sharks is a worry with Greg Norman as long as the emblem isnt the same, I know another club that uses the same emblem as the East Freo one.
