The consensus seems to be no big deal, and i guess fans would live with it.
Personally, I'd much rather a season where there is actually a bit of tension about who will make the 8 With ten, top sides have to go through the motions of beating sides who haven't really earned the right to be there. Good little earner for the AFL for fans who will go and see their teams even if they have Buckley's.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but theoretically, depending on the margins games are lost and won by, a team could lose half it's games during the season and still make the finals. It seems a bit odd.

Does a team who wins 8 or 9 games really deserve to be rewarded with the opportunity to extend their season?
Probably not, but again - who cares?
If the AFL makes an extra million or so, good - we get a bigger distribution. If we are playing, we get an even bigger distribution.
Wipe out a round of the pre-season and add it in...if another 100 thousand or so supporters remain interested in the season as they battle for a 'top 10' spot, so what? There is already a lot of 'make the finals' focus even though teams outside the top 4 have very little chance of success...
I know what everyone is saying about a reward for mediocrity etc but I just don't know why it bothers everyone so much. They still wont win the flag and a poster on another thread (about rating our preseason) said everyone who doesn't win the flag fails anyway...
Practice matches? maybe 1. They play intraclubs as well.

22 rounds is too long to begin with, by round 15 we all know who is the top 5 or 6 teams who can and can't make the finals.
22 rounds only wasn't too long when there were 11 teams. 34 rounds might be unrealistic but spliting the the draw in half and playing more rounds to get more consistency is what should happen.
Top 5 or 6 may be settled but not the positions.

The teams who can't make the finals lose interest as do their supporters.
So Brisbane, Suns, Richmond, etc fans shouldn't even turn up in 2011. Sorry but thats the sport for you, you win or lose. I'd still go.

Has Eade or anyone from our club expressed an opinion either way?

I'm up for a less regular season games/more finals ratio.
I find the regular season very long in comparison to what you actually get for your efforts. The sides out of the finals race have nothing to play for a very long time.
With the final 8 system 1-4 and 5-8 have identical benefits if they are from the same state. We won't always have a Vic top 4 but I would like to see greater advantages for sides finishing higher up on the ladder. The sides guaranteed a home QF can have very little to play for for a very long time.
I'd like to see a finals system that goes for a week or even 2 longer, with that time being cut from the regular season but most importantly I want to see a finals system that separates it's advantages. Give the top 2 as much as a leg up as possible, 3rd and 4th a rung below that, 5th and 6th so on and 7-10 very little.
