Police arrest Gold Coast Suns player

Football star Harley Bennell has been charged with disorderly conduct following an incident on New Year's Eve.

The Gold Coast Suns midfielder was reportedly with friends when a large fight broke out during local New Year's Eve celebrations on the Mandurah foreshore, south of Perth.

Mr Bennell was arrested at the scene about 2am and taken to Mandurah police station where he was charged before being bailed early this morning.

Bennell was picked number 2 by the Gold Coast Suns in 2010 draft, after playing WAFL with Peel Thunder Football Club.

In 2012 he played every game during the season and finished runner-up to Gary Ablett in the club championship.

A spokesperson from the Gold Coast Suns confirmed that Harley Bennell was involved in a "minor incident while celebrating New Year's Eve".

"As it is a police matter we are unable to make any further comment," they said.

You can certainly be in the wrong place and while they say it was a large fight only Bennells name is being mentioned.

Just another example of players behaving in the off season. AFL wont be happy, but its hardly in the Jurrah class of offence.

He was charged with disorderly conduct.

Not really a "story", the dude's been charged so it's newsworthy, unfortunately.

I don't know. Maybe Westdog can provide an insight to how things work in WA for disorderly conduct.

Just took a look here: http://www.australiancriminallawyers..._criminal_code

According to WA Law for the charge of Disorderly Behaviour in Public (Disorderly Conduct),
Section 74A: A person who behaves in a disorderly manner in a public place or in the sight or hearing of any person who is in a public place or who behaves in a disorderly manner in a police station or lock-up, is guilty of an offence.

                “Disorderly Behaviour” includes:

                (1) Using insulting, threatening or offensive language; and
                (2) Behaving in an insulting, threatening or offensive manner.

It is lawful for a person, without a warrant, to arrest any person who is, or who the person reasonably suspects, is in the course of committing an offence of disorderly behaviour in public.
                and

According to WA Law for the charge of Disorderly Behaviour in Public (Disorderly Conduct),
The maximum penalty is a fine of $6,000.
In addition, by way of comparison, Heath Black was charged with disorderly conduct in 2009 after admitting on the phone to police that he had been involved in a fight.

gee that is difficult to find but apparently in 2005 6745 people were arrested for disorderly conduct in WA.

Ah well. Caroline Wilson will have some mud to fling the moment she graces her desk in 2013.

Not as bad as what the crows fitness coach did a few weeks ago, when out and about with Sando and Matt Clarke , according to media reports

Yeah, comparing what Young allegedly did (a 40 year old who should know a lot better) compared to this incredibly minor incident involving a 20 year old who still no doubt has a lot of growing up to do, poles apart.

The Crows media mafia are great at keeping stories under wraps. I'm actually unsure if the assault story broke anywhere but Adelaide.

I doubt this will have any effect on Bennell really, but all the same hope it doesn't, a very exciting talent who I want to see a lot more footy from.

Storm in a teacup - he could have been booked for swearing at the bloke who started the fight for all we know.
