One for the old timers - Bottles thrown on ground

Read today that the AFL have banned the Carlton nob for two years for throwing a drink bottle at the umpires. That got me remembering back in the 70's how it was like when you were still allowed to drink beer from a bottle. (hate beer out of plastic cups)

I can't remember the year, but we were playing Essendon at home and Don McKenzie (the Essendon player not dogs player with the same name) deliberately fell on Barry Rounds leg, in the forward pocket Geelong road end. Barry broke his leg and the fans were furious as a shower of bottles came over the fence at McKenzie. There must have been at least 100 bottles chucked at him.

    Times were sure different.

Any other stories out there with bottles, cans from the old days.

Didn't Grinter cop a lot of saliva in his direction for his cowardly act on Wallace?

I was there that day and he did cop it. Bottles were banned by then.

The one thing I do remember about going to the footy in the 60's and 70's was the amount of drunk people. There was always a fight with guys pissed out of their mind.

        Impossible.

Today Tonight tells me that this is solely a Gen Y issue, and that things were much better in previous decades.

The suburban grounds like Windy Hill were frightening even for children back in the day.
Remember a Fitzroy fan being king hit at Princess park in the early 80's .
          Died from his injuries.
I think what actually saved us was that Footscray were rubbish

I remember walking through the outer at Princess Park during a Melbourne versus Fitzroy game in 1991, my dad and I were heading home a minute or so into the last quarter.

My old man all of a sudden started wincing with pain, and breathing deeply. He picked up off the ground a large socket from a socket set somebody in the crowd decided to throw, which had hit him on the bony part of the shoulder!

            Madness.

I can't tell whether that's sarcasm or not?

Anyone see the cat running around the boundary line at the Freo North match.

I guess it can't beat this.

                    Correct.

I suppose I love how shows aimed at the ignorant, the baby boomers and those born before them bash the bejeezus out of Gen Y and look at the past with rose coloured glasses.

It's good to know there's sufficient pragmatism on this board to cut through all of it, and we can have a laugh and reflect on how ordinary some aspects of going to the football used to be.

Try going for a piss at Kardinia Park back in the day with your Bulldogs scarf and beanie!
Straight into the urinal they went. You could say it was feral.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

Not as feral as putting them straight back on, in an act of defiance!

Nah, Gen Y would expect the perpetrators to apologise, wash, rinse off and dry said beanie and scarf and have them presented back to them in a half time apology ceremony.
