Melbourne draftee Christian Petracca will miss the rest of the season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee at training on Monday.
Petracca, the No.2 overall pick in last year's draft, landed awkwardly during a drill and was assessed on the boundary at Gosch's Paddock. He was sent for scans, with these confirming the Demons' worst fears.
Demons' football operations manager Josh Mahoney said Petracca would have surgery on his knee as soon as possible.
"Christian had an incident today (Monday) at training, which involved twisting his knee," he said.
"Unfortunately, scans today confirmed a rupture of the ACL in his left knee.
"This is devastating news for Christian and the club, as he was preparing for the season ahead.
"He'll meet surgeons tonight and have the appropriate surgery to repair the ACL as soon as possible."
