    Over-rated / Under Rated #2: James O'Donnell

    Age: 22
    Games Total: 26
    Games Last Year: 14

    The story:
Recruited (somewhat oddly) under the obscure "players from other sports" rule - aka the AFL trying to get in the best athletes they can from other codes and strengthen the AFL/weaken the other sports (in this case cricket by removing developing depth). James focussed on cricket from ages 16-20'ish before dipping his toes back in the footy waters in his 20th year...there was a bit of cloak and dagger around his signing (and with the death of 'open mike' the full story will probably never come out) but suffice to say James signed with the 'dogs early in 2023 and played soon thereafter, quickly becoming a match committee favourite and a fixture in defense.

He has shown the ability to defend 1-on-1 against smaller players (he's pretty tall at 197cm) and he has good agility. Seems a forthright + determined type who will stick his head over the footy / fly at the contest with little regard to his safety when required...the problem is that he sometimes seems to do those 'things' when the situation requires a bit more nuance...I mean, he plays at times like he missed 3-4 years of key development years...does seem to be the ultimate team player though who will simply put his head down and work to complete whatever task the MC have assigned him,

    Is James:
a). Over-rated - Yeah, he's athletic and LOOKS the part but his footy smarts don't correlate to the number of opportunities he's been given.
b). Properly-rated - He's a committed and versatile player who has played < 30 games...but he's also going to make mistakes. He's best 22 BUT if he's playing KPD at this stage of his development then we've got some bigger problems!!
c). Under-rated - He's 197cm tall and runs like a deer - and has played 2 seasons of footy! He just needs to keep getting games and he'll be everything we want and more...think AA FB/CHB is in his future!
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

I'm a believer in the James O'Donnell story and to me he's got a lot of good footy ahead of him.
We are still likely to be 12 months away from seeing the best of him consistently though.
I think B is his right rating although he hasn't earned a best 32 rating just yet.

On current form - perhaps slightly overrated, may have been gifted games when he was only "just" earning them.
Ceiling - underrated. 197cm guys who are brave in the air and can run and kick are like gold, once they develop game sense. JOD just needs to keep playing (at any level) and he'll figure things out,

He has a lot of upside in terms of physique and athleticism - but so did Craig Ellis and he did really blossom into the player I expected him to become. I hope JOD goes on to master every facet of the game. At the moment I think he might be a little over rated.

          B.

would like to see Busslinger receive a similar treatment to Jod as I don’t believe they are too far apart skill wise imo

Hasn’t blown me away as much as other supporters I’ve seen who seem to rave about him. Think he has good potential tho and hope the young man succeeds

B- is the correct rating at this stage, he’s only been in a professional environment for circa 2 years and his best will be circa 18 months away. I think he’ll play 150 ish games, which for a rookie is a ✅

We certainly played him in his first season when he really wasn't ready.
He might need a bit of luck with injury. The training reports seem to indicate he has filled out a bit so I wonder if he is as versatile as we might perceive him.
I'm cautiously optimistic but he has been overrated but many supporters because the story is a brilliant one.
I'd rate him A as slightly overrated but he should be a good player for us.

Wow. You know that would have him in the top 6% of players to ever represent the club?

I'm not arguing - he might - but I do think when commentators in particular throw around statements like "he'll settle in and play 200-games for the club" it just goes through to the keeper but is an enormous call...Anyway, 150-games for a rookie is a bit more than a green tick!! 1-game for a rookie is a green tick.

150 games is an ambitious target for any player at one club but 100 is possibly a more realistic target and that would still be a significant achievement..
I'd need to see more if him this year to be 150 game bold but lets hope Brody is right.

Very hard to judge. Slight upgrade on Gardner at this stage with a large potential scope of improvement.

Feel like he's fairly rated. Probably not a best 22 lock at thia early stage of his career.

I don't think he warrants being "best 22" at this stage, so that leaves me with A, despite thinking both other statements apply. Although he has definitely been given more gametime than his form has warranted.

He is diligent, clearly impressive outside match day, plays his role, and has good physical attributes, however:

He isn't impactful and doesn't have a weapon. Flies well, but marking isn't a clear strength, tidy enough kick, but more compared to other KPDs than the general playing pool, moves well, but not fast. He can try and play a lockdown role, but hasn't really proven he can do it, especially against good players.

Could he become a good all round defender who can mark, or our best defensive stopper option who allows the rest of the defence to do their thing, or even something more versatile? Maybe. But he hasn't really shown he can do it at AFL level thus far and until he does I don't think you can confidently say he has proven he has more to him than say Cameron Wight did at this stage (possibly very harsh).
I should leave it alone but you're not right

I would rate him an A at this stage because he is still developing but getting games. He has huge potential and we know talls take longer to mature. Another year under his belt and he will move to B

                              A. Slightly overrated by some but I'm happy he's learning from the likes of Bevo, Pratt. Liam and Rory.
