    The Bulldogs Bite is back

Is the new era arriving under our eyes? This is the first time since probably ‘21 I’ve woken up after a loss relatively happy & confident. This is the first time since ‘21 that I think we’re competing in games due to our system and not the individual brilliance of Bont & Libba dragging a poor team across the line. Our identity as a football club is back, the signs were there in the 2nd half of last season but I think it’s starting to shine through and we’re in for a wild ride this year.

Take it back to 2022 and we were a shambles - the grand final killed us. Bevo and our overall coaching was genuinely trash, he was just not himself - grumpy and fighting with everyone. It’s not entirely his fault, the club failed him by surrounding him with very poor and inexperienced coaching line up but let’s be honest here 2022 & 2023 was bad. Yeah we won a few games on the back of Bont but it was a boring, stale football team. Win the clearance, go wide & slow, kick long, hope for the best - repeat. We lacked an identity.

Fast forward to mid-2024 and now - I can actually see what we’re trying to do, I can see the way the team wants to defend the ground and move the ball forward. Yeah it’s scrappy right now and there’s too many errors and too many poor players in the side but these guys have not played much football together. Once the troops arrive and push out the bottom 6 of the side, once this, well balanced team gets some continuity in their football watch us thrive.

Bevo is back, he’s calm and collected and has his trademark “aura” - I almost get the feeling win or lose this year he might have come to terms with his time at the club coming to an end? Just an assumption and gut feel but it’s the vibe I’m getting from him & the club. If it’s the case I really hope we can send him off as a winner and the club champion he is. If it is the case whether it’s this year, next or even the year after I believe right now he’s setting the club up on the right track for when the time comes.

The refresh has happened under our eyes - yes we love Macrae and Daniel but that era died in September 2021. The new era has arrived - Bont, Freijah, Richards and Libba are the new core in the midfield. We have potentially the best forward in the comp just coming alive. We have speed across every line and an appetite to play quick direct football. We have a will to win the contest and impact the play like we had at our best. We’re relying on depth and role players playing out of their skins but theyre holding on.

The vibe is right - how far can we go this year? I honestly think if we can get some luck with injuries the system we’ve put in place over the past 18 months can take us deep.

    I am with you.

Really liked the effort against Collingwood.

A few errors cost us but we are looking like we will sort that out.

Still difficult until we get players back but lookout when we have close to a full list.

I think Pratt coming in has been monumental. Won assistant coach of the year and totally transformed are back end (Lobb helps a lot). Up to 2023 were were basically a clearance or bust team and I think Bevo and the coaches understood that the game was turning into a transition and running game. We clearly have adjusted and gotten rid of slow players like Macrae and CD in favour of a bit of youth. Will be great to see us at some what full strength to see where we fit in things. Couldn't agree more with you guys in terms of excitement. Still can't get confident right now but if we can win 1 of the next two and be 2-2 going into gather round that would be a great start. Not only in a W/L perspective but with the youth we have blooded, expecting Hynes and Croft to play sometime this season as well.

This is something we're aligned on DFTW! While we had our challenges with coaching and footy department support post 2021, weren't settled over the 2022-2023 preseason, while we also seemed to be transitioning our list or going through a similar refresh/ rebuild like we did after 2018. I've posted a few times the past year or two it's felt similar to the build up to the 2021 season.

Different voices in the coaching team seem to be bearing fruit. I think Lade in his first year probably was too safe with how he treated the midfield, with a homogenous line up. Spangher seems to have sorted out some system in the forward half, and while Rohan Smith had previously been able to get a lot out of our defensive side of the game things went off the boil and Pratt coming in has clearly helped.

Injecting fresh run whether by positional changes or personnel has made a difference to our overall blend. We don't seem slow in terms of foot speed, our disposal and cleanness will hopefully catch up as we bring more quality into the side. Depth seems OK, outside of the ruck, but I'll hold off on being convinced we can get to the soldier out-soldier in level required until I see how we handle a few more tests this year.

Like It. It took some pre-season overload injuries to maybe find the bite, but it is back indeed.

I reckon we are a massive sleeper at the moment. When we get a couple of mids back and tidy up our clearance work we can beat anyone.

I also reckon our other draftees in Jacques and Hynes can have a big impact later in the season. I reckon Jacques prior to getting injured was our most likely draftee to play. I was really impressed with him at training.

Hynes will continue to get better at vfl level through the season. And I think he is a piece that gives us a different look than any other player on the list. I see a bit of LDU in him.

Croft could also add another dimension. A man of his size and endurance as a high half forward is exciting. He will be a low possession player early in his career. His gonna be a big man that’s hard to defend whilst you don’t lose anything with forward pressure.

I was pessimistic at the start of the year.

The way Duyrea is playing, if Jaques was fit, it might have already happened
