If that’s a hot start, I wouldn’t want to be around for an ‘Average’ one!

Everyone has shortcomings and areas for improvement, but of all our ‘fringe’ players we seem the most willing to overlook his and accentuate any positives. Last night I recall one really positive involvement on the half back line…one where he should have gone but didn’t…and then he was done.

Why do we want it so bad for Arty?
Lol he was on for 20 mins, nice nitpicking on the stat line though, his 3 disposals went at 100% his Clanger was a free against, could have also mentioned the 6 pressure acts & 2 tackles - double the amount of McNeil & VDM in a full game. His pressure helped set the stage for us.

Clearly your expectations are well out of whack for a role player half forward/winger. What stat line are you actually expecting for a player with his role in the side?

No one’s making excuses for him, I hardly said he was staring i said he started hot, after a good 3 weeks in the 2s working his way in. He’s now out for 10 weeks not sure I see a need to whack him online but you do you

I have no feelings about the team but it’s worth a mention that we’ve won the last two at Pork Barrel Park. I think the turnover in the team is significant enough that the ground holds few ghosts for our guys now. I think that matters.

I'm still not sure he makes it, but he passed the eye test for me this weekend. By my recollection his pressure / tackling started the chain for at least one of our first quarter goals, and possibly even a second. pretty harsh to boil his contribution down to raw possession stats.

Given their aerial dominance in the backline I actually want us to stay with the two tall structure (plus taller mid resting) and use a bit of chaos ball in the F50, make them panic when the ball hits the deck.

Lobb beat Cameron last time and he's their best forward - let's do that again.

Baker for Arty, fairly like for like. Keep the winning formula.

You said he started hot. 100%. Doesn't that imply he's starring?

What stat line am I expecting from him? Something like this:

15-18 possessions that includes 10-12 kicks.
            3-5 tackles.
            3-5 HBG.
            3-5 LBG.
            1x Clearance.
            5x Score involves.
            2-3 score assists.
            1-score.

After watching him come through juniors and being pretty excited we drafted him - I'm happy for you to go back and look! - I'm actually in his corner. I find it hard to remain there though as it feels in the eyes of so many he just can do no wrong. To be honest, your "HOT START" message really grated me as in the scheme of things he had basically done very little...though your perspective on that is obviously different.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

Are you confident that we can implement this strategy?

With the same line-up we have now we totally tried to change how we play in the 1st qtr against GWS and were lucky to be so close at 1/4 time. We switched Rory to the fwd line and we were able to negate Buckley who was dominant early on and got the game on our terms from there.

When we flogged Geelong last year, we had 3 genuine talls in our forward line, and whilst conditions will be very different, we were able to quell their intercept game and through sheer weight of numbers were able to grind them down. Concerned that Naughton will be negated by SDK which leaves O'Sullivan & Henry for Buku & the taller mid.

However very confident that our mids will get the ball going our way so it all comes down to how we use the ball.

Honestly, yes. It's what we've been doing for the better part of the past month anyway. Kennedy and Bont take turns down there, and Westy even gets isolated at times as his marking has improved.
Compared to other teams we get fewer goals from our KPFs and more goals from our mids. It's working.

                  Out - Arty, Bramble
                  In - Baker, Coffield

Make Coffield the sub, he has had some pretty good form in back to back VFL games. Baker replaces Arty on the wing.

Give Bramble a spell in the twos and hopefully he bounces back like Doc did.

                    In: Scott
                    Out: Jones

I’m a mark for Scott’s sheer competence and ability to not ruin everything by the mere virtue of existing and think he’s a perfect compliment for the rest of the side.

I want to get Buss in but I don’t see it this week. Lobb’s game on Cameron last year was unbelievable and I don’t really want to move him forward ever again anyway.

Yeah I always find it funny when people call for ‘chaos ball’ like it’s a viable strategy you can actually attempt.

If our mids are in enough space to make a proper decision entering the fwd 50 then they’ll be trying to hit a target and would get ridiculed if they were just drubbing them in along the ground. When you don’t have the time and space and you’re kicking long out of the contest well that’s where the interceptors come in, but you don’t have a say in this. You can’t reliably hit the ‘chaos ball’ when you’re under pressure in the midfield, that’s the whole point. It’s something that can and has worked for us in recent weeks but it’s not a ‘strategy’ as such, it’s just dumb luck.

Realistically it just comes down to the midfield battle, if we continue to dominate like we have been then our smaller fwd line will continue to function extremely well. If we’re matched in the middle and don’t have time & space (ie GWS qtr 1, GC game etc) then we’ll have to revert to Lobb fwd like we have been to try and structure up a bit better in front of the ball and limit the damage from the oppo interceptors.

This structure atm though is playing with fire a bit IMO, it’s done us well but if we lose a tall early one week we’re going to be extremely limited with ingame options. I’d like to transition to a slightly more sustainable style - 5 genuine talls & a ruck seems right, 2 at each end with a swingman off the bench.

Yes and they likely to swing a change like Harry Taylor going forward and kicking 6. From memory there was another surprise move a few years ago who kicked 5 against us. Never kicked 5 in their life.

I watched Arty's start closely. He is still getting lost in the contest and hesitant whether or not to defend, attack or wait. When they have ball in hand, his speed and instincts are good with pressure and chasing. Outside of this, his game has not grown at the rate we would have hoped. It was far from a hot start. Barely warm and then sadly, ping. Let's hope he returns soon, but needs to work on many aspects of his game.

Here we go again, will be no doubt, wrong again.

I disagree with the urge to get taller, it is working fine, and the Cats only established key forward, does most of his work, running anyway.

                              Backs:
                              Lobb - JOD - Truck - JJ - Dale - Cleary
                              Outside:
