A bit of a later post this week as I was only able to catch the last quarter live so had to rewatch the rest this morning, was preoccupied being a runner for my local footy team (went down by 10 to 2nd on the ladder, disappointing but a great effort).
This game was always going to be a danger game against a full strength Sydney side that’s starting to hit their stride. They absolutely brought the heat all game and for one of the first times that I can recall this user, when challenged the boys really stood up and came out the other end with a fantastic win. I know the narrative will still be that we haven’t beaten a side in the 8, but make no mistake this was a tough opposition and a great win.
Goal accuracy I thought was one of the key stats we nailed that gave us the win. That’s not something you can usually say about a Dogs game but boy is it beautiful to watch when we can nail that last kick between the big sticks. Matty Kennedy has been really solid on the front this year, something like 70% goal accuracy and it’s been a joy to watch
Something really great about this win, and really the story of the whole season, is that we haven’t needed to rely on our stars to get the win. Bont, Libba, Richards all had a quiet night by their standards and still we were able to get the win. A lot of our younger or unheralded players played their role perfectly and got us over the line.
A quick shoutout to those players too, I thought Freijah and Sanders really put opposition teams on notice that they are stars of the future. I also want to shoutout Bramble in particular, he’s been a bit of a whipping boy the last couple years, arguably way too harsh of a treatment as well for someone who hasn’t done a whole lot wrong. Dale copped a hard tag after half time and boy did Bramble step up, one of the best quarters you’ll see in the 3rd.
Lastly, just one last congratulations to the Bont. What an incredible person, player and leader. I am beyond privileged that he captains my footy club, something I will never take for granted witness arguably the greatest ever Bulldog in my lifetime. I hope and I pray that he will still be at the club next year and for many years to come. Not worried at this stage that he won’t be, but I’ll certainly sit more comfortably when it’s official, congrats on 250 Bonty, glad the boys got the W for you to celebrate
