    Take a breath & debrief - Round 18

This one’s gonna be a long one, I’ve got some feelings. Another big game, another failed test. This has been the story of the season. Once again we were competitive against the top team, but just couldn’t get over the line. In a season where the gap between top 4 and finishing 9th is so close, being 1-7 against the top 9 is what’s going to cost us top 4 and possibly even finals.

We have 3 more games against top 9 sides but basically we need to win out from here to be a chance for top 4 which as a Bulldogs supporter all my life, I just can’t see happening, we should still win enough to play finals but why do we insist on making it hard for ourselves every season.

Quite simply, our backline this year is just not good enough to be a premiership backline, part of this is our system being very offense based but it’s also personnel. JOD and Lobb have battled incredibly hard all season but just aren’t quite at the level needed and our star studded midfield at times has been a real let down for our defence, who simply doesn’t have the tools to hold up when it’s 1v1 against the best

Some of the broken tackles and lack of pressure in this game was ugly to watch and in the end that’s what cost us the game, need that old school “bring your mouth guards to training” method this week. We MUST bring our best to the Gabba to be a chance at causing a boilover up there

On the other end, when teams bring pressure to us, and it’s happened this way all year, we seem to completely crumble, we turn it over way too easily and once we do turn it over it feels like they score every single time

I’m proud the boys didn’t give up and caught hard to the end, but we took way too long to start taking the game on and to be honest, at no point did we actually look like a chance to steal a win.

Last thing I’ll say, and I’ll pre-emphasis this by saying that I will NEVER blame the umpires for costing us a game, it’s swings and roundabouts each game and at the end of the day they didn’t lose us the game, Adelaide just was the better team, BUT. They were absolutely deplorable in this game, and it’s not that some of their calls for Adelaide were wrong necessarily but they were only being called one-way. How many goals did they get directly from free kicks, while once again our forwards were getting beaten up in every contest and barely got a single call, as fans all we want is consistency.

There were a number of horrific calls or non-calls that led directly to Crows goals, there are three that really stand out (without a rewatch). First is that centre bounce that should have been recalled and wasn’t that led directly to a Crows goal. How on earth do they not recall a bounce that went clearly out of the circle and Tim English doesn’t even get close to being able to get to is beyond me and it’s a joke.

The second is that Rankine free kick right at the end of the 3rd quarter, he was holding and shoving JOD that whole marking contest, but Rankine gets the free kick for a hold that you could barely even see on the replay, technically that free kick may be there, but what about the 3 different free kicks that Rankine should’ve given away to JOD in that same contest beforehand

Finally, it was that ridiculous non-call in our goal square when Bont laid the tackle and the Crows player literally just handed the ball to his teammate, I can somewhat understand when they try to handball it and it looks 50/50 but this was one of the worst non-calls all year, how did not one umpire see a CLEAR incorrect disposal.

So those examples right there lead to a 3-goal swing directly, among plenty of other examples all game. And again, I think Crows were the better team and who knows how it would’ve played out if they were correctly called, but the simple fact is, the umpires need to be held to account when there’s disgraceful, one-way decisions like that all game

Excellent review but I'd challenge the notion that we were competitive against them yesterday.

On our home deck in front of 41k we found ourselves 5 goals down at one stage. It was deplorable let's stop papering over cracks. Adelaide pretty much did whatever they wanted yesterday they walked it out of stoppages and pressured us into turnover after turnover. Their movement by hand and foot was exemplary and they ran hard into space all day. It was a mauling and we've got bigger issues than personnel shortages.

We didn't work as hard as them and we weren't strong enough in the contest.

      Big issues.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

Great write up mate. Thanks for the contribution.
As for the umpires, in the cold hard light of day, it's never been an excuse for me.
Big week on the track for the boys.

Did not enjoy seeing R.OB cover so much ground and just so decisive everywhere. Thought he was fantastic, which makes me sick to say.

I agree that I never thought we were in the game? But end of the day, it was only 11 points. The optimist in me would suggest if we only go down by 11 despite playing a pretty horrible game, we’re in a good spot. The pessimist in me however, is it’s the same story in all 7 of our losses and it ultimately could cost us finals in general let alone any possibility of top 4

Yep, thought English wasn’t too bad, ROB’s tap work however was elite and was huge in their defense

                Agree re: umpires.

I’ll add the caveat that the particular crew that officiated have presented a game that feels different to other weeks, Crows/Cats/Pies games just seemed like we weren’t on the same page.

We get a lot of squealing about FreeKickBulldogs, but I think some of that has been our play style and a real clarity across the board about where the boundaries and interpretations are at. Reckon Crows defence are in that groove too now. Made life difficult and really rode the threshold for how the u purse saw the contest. That’s a credit to the Crows rather than a knock on the umpires. It’s like the weather, play to the conditions.

                  Good post.
Their kicking inside 50 to set up Walker, Thilthorpe and Fogerty was top notch. Pretty much giving them the upper hand on their opponents, whether on the lead, or running into space, moving their opponent out of position. We needed another key back plain and simple.

also, I’m not sure on their kicking efficiency, but they seemed to move the ball with ease out of defence and transition through the guts well, nearly always giving their key fwds shots within 30 metres of goal, and almost directly infront.

we are nowhere near a top 4 team…nowhere near it. Our backs can hardly defend 1 vs 1. Other than Dale, and possibly Lobb for his size, there are no elite kicks down there. It’s heart in your mouth territory every time it goes down there.

No top 4 team have a bottom 6 like we do. Against these sides you just can’t carry players. You can’t have Hynes at half time with 1 kick (1 goal), and 1 handball. Not when players like Kennedy and Freijah had 2 kicks each at HT.

I was happy we didn’t throw it away and lose by 40+, but did we really look like winning it after quarter time ? It was a band aid performance, and I reckon the band aid will well and truly be ripped off at the Gabba.

crows look very well balanced, well coached, and have a solid defence and a forward line that doesn’t rely on a few.

as a side note, how did the MC think they could hold Thilthorpe, Walker and Fogerty with 2 key backman, when those 2 couldn’t handle 1 Larkey. Mind boggles.
I will never see #16 the same!!

There were definitely frustrating patches where we set the ground up well and they were just able to pull off elite kicks that broke through our zone. Some of their entries as well had a severe lack of pressure and you give a professional footy player time and space they will hit those kicks more often than not
