I feel like I'm contemplating too much these days and some of my time is being consumed by the 'attack dog' level the media have been going at our club.
I'm a 1970's baby and have been following the dogs (I'm a Perth boy) since the early 80's. I've told the story before.
As I grew up, there were clear haves and have-nots. The 'Dogs - along with the Roys, Saints, Dees, Roos and Swans - were the 'NOTS'. The Cats were in the middle. The Hawks won every year so they were a 'Have Not' under zero scrutiny, the Tiges LOST every week so they were a 'HAVE' under pressure. The Blues, Dons and Pies did whatevs. I've no doubt missed someone...
Anyway, as time has gone on:
- The Roys are gone.
- The SWANS are in Sydney and hence now 'FINE'.
- Geelong and Hawthorn have moved out of the middle into the 'top' - Geelong helped by Geography, the Hawks helped by winning loads of flags and getting heaps of supporters as a result.
- The Dees, Saints and Roos still have their hands out to the AFL every year and are really battling on and off the field.
WE have moved ourselves into the middle, We really dont seek AFL financial assistance. The club is - historical law suits that no-one involved today is responsible for - financially stable. We play finals as often as any of the 'big' sides. We have the most acclaimed player (Bont) and the most acclaimed YOUNG player (Darcy) in the game. We have a stable coaching environment with our current senior coach > 10-years into a successful tenure. We were a pioneer of the AFLW AND have created an amazing off-field facility for both mens and womens programs...
So why the hell are we the ones they wanna go after?
If anything, the media should be looking at what the club has been able to do - independently operating in a highly competitive environment and over-coming what was a pretty low base in terms of results on field (though plenty of amazing individual footballers!) and financially off the field.
If ever a club needs a PR Manager it is ours.
