45 minutes without a goal is the moment for me. That’s the game.

We take a few chances to break up their goal run and it could have been different .

Baker snap. Naughton miss from the boundary. Kennedy miss on the run.

We needed to find a way against the trend of the game to break the momentum.

No it seemed we just let it role on. English was getting smashed (IMO worst all year) the 2 big forwards hadn’t taken a mark. The back were under siege as we didn’t pressure the ball carriers going in the F50

I would have thrown Darcy into the ruck and sub off Timmy. We took off Bus and played shorter down back. Arty coming on was a huge positive injection
              BB.

Looking forward - Naughton, Darcy and JUH. It will be the envy of everyone.

Thought he was Tim Welsh on my rating scale this week.

Mostly good at the coal face and effort wise, but dropped marks killed us.

It was a horrible game in the air for us all and sundry. The obvious thing to reflect on was the run and spread, but a lot of that came from their numbers getting a soft crumb after a dropped mark or poor defensive aerial clearance.

Starts with Garcia missing 2 in first quarter. Having McNeil in the team. I have been saying for weeks that stop Naughton and Darcy the rest are not good forwards. Freo used our not good forwards to their advantage. We needed Croft to nail his easy goals to give them something to worry about but they knew it was his second game. If Darcy had the delivery like the freo forwards got he would have kicked 10 in their side yesterday. But the poor bloke gets balls coming in high enough to cause rain and he is competing with 10 others in a forward line that has 25 people in it. Freo goals come from run and skill and they were labelled vanilla. At the end of the day they had better contributions across 23 players. We kept Serong and Brayshaw to low numbers and they still got us. Their small forwards got plenty of the ball and looked dangerous Reid 19 Switkowski 17 Bolton 19. McNeil 4 Garcia 9 West 17 in comparison. West's game was OK but if naughton and Darcy kept quiet then it wasnt good enough to cover them.

Second quarter - freo up 10ish - ball gets kicked into their forward line - Voss crumbs it off hands and runs into an open goal as JOD gets beaten goal side and flat footed - was exactly a time we needed to be able to hold firm - and was emblematic of us defending meekly when it really mattered

I thought Tim was as strong in the ruck duels and fought as hard as I’ve seen him. Maybe I missed some things being at the ground and he definitely dropped a few contested grabs, but thought he was everything in the ruck that he’s been criticised for not being his whole career.
He was a fair way from being our biggest problem. Maybe we should have subbed off Darcy who was abject in probably the worst game of his career.

Whatever was said at quarter time, it was like we swapped jumpers from then on.

English was poor at the important ruck contests, the centre bounce. Many of his hitouts there went to a Freo clearance directly down the ground. I noticed that number 8 was setting up for it and usually he was well clear of an opponent. This exaggerated Fremantl’s performance in the second quarter because each goal led to a repeat centre contest giving them momentum. So the game was played in their forward zone.
