    First quarter. Deep dive.

Watched the replay. Here's my deep dive into the First Quarter.

50 secs in. Great tackle. Free kick. Garcia 30mt out, 45°, misses by a metre
2 mins in. Croft marks 40mt out. Slight angle. Just scrapes in for a point.
2.50 in Libba on 50mt on his right. Naughton and Darcy hang back. Kick marked by Cox. Naughton too late to effect the contest.
3.30 in. Boundary throw in centre wing. Ŵe win stoppage. Ball gets to Bailey Dale. He doesn't make the distance from 45mt on his right foot. When he got the ball we had no one in the goal square. Freo mark in square.

4.30 in. Kennedy and English BOTH go for the mark. Ball spills. Freo pounce. Lobb is not shoulder to shoulder with Treacy. Kick is perfect.. He misses.

6.00 in. Kennedy has Williams short, on his own but kicks to Naughton in a 2 on 1. Naughton goals. Kick out of mid air.

7.00 in. Boundary throw in. 80 mt out from Freo's goal. English gives up front position to Darcy. Perfect tap to Young who bursts free. Drives Ball deep into pocket. Ball spills from contest to Bolton who kicks brilliant snap goal.

8.30 in. Davidson,, on his left, has a shot at an open goal square from 45 out. Rolls through for a point.

9.30 in. Busslinger marks. Between wing and centre. There's a huge hole in our forward 50 but no one is leading. He kicks to a contest which English doesn't make. Richards can't mark against taller opponents. Stoppage 50mt out. We win it. Davidson centres ball but goes straight to Ryan

9.50 in. Garcia misses a very gettable snap from 20mt out.

11..15 in. Garcia handballs directly to Young who hand passes to O'Meara who delivers perfectly to Amiss on the lead 5mt clear of JOD. Goal. 14 - 4 inside 50 and THEY LEAD. FMD! And if you look at the replay you will see that, as soon as Young got the ball, Amiss began to break away from JOD and run left to be in direct line of sight with O'Meara, leaving JOD trailing behind him. Did he read the play better or is that playing to a system? At this stage. Brayshaw and Serong have had one disposal each.

13.00 in Umpire sucked i. Free kick against Freijah for a push

6.00 mins to go. Croft marks from Naughton. Goals.

From the centre bounce Libba gets advantage call, and with lots of space kicks on his right to a contest when he had Freijah on his own. Ball punched clear. It ends up with Libba again, 48 mt out. He misses on his left. 16 - 4 inside 50s

5.00 mins left. Beautiful kick by Richards to West . He goals.

2.10 left. Banfields shot is marked by English on goal line. He kicks to Lobb, who kicks to Williams who kicks to Darcy who kicks to Bont who is just forward on the centre. We have no one inside forward 50. He kicks to Davidson. Freijah missed the opportunity to block. The kick had too much hang time and Freo punch it over

1.30 left. West caught high. Free kick goal.. 19 inside 50s
Serong had 2 possessions in the first quarter.

    We lead by just 16 points. Time in forward half 67% Contested possessions 39 - 24. Uncontested possessions 48 - 51. Inside 50s 19 - 10.. Clearances 10 - 6. Centre clearances 3 - 4. Contested marks 4 - 1. Uncontested marks 11 - 18. Turnovers 18 - 20. Clangers 15 - 12. Tackles 18 - 15

We contested well. We executed poorly.

The first qtr was not the problem yesterday - I would love to have a problem like that every week, where we are 16 points up dominating possession/territory and having the game being played completely on our terms.

All season Brisbane can't hit the side of a barn door when kicking for goal, but they are relentless making the game played on their terms for the full 120 minutes until they break their opponents.

Yes, of course, I know it wasn't the problem. But it was a missed opportunity. I might take a deep dive into the second quarter. Are you a fan of horror shows/disaster movies/ tragedies?

My question re 1st v 2nd. Did we drop the Serong tag/run with or did LIbba just get beaten?

Libba was all over him early - only had two touches in the first qtr. Had ten in the second and from what I saw Tom wasn't as bothered with what he was doing.

It was only a missed opportunity because we were unable to adapt to Freo making some changes to their structure at qtr time. That's on us - the coaching group, the senior core in the middle, the defenders for not being able to handle some deep water. We were looking pretty good at 1/4 time in the EF last year as well. Our senior players as a collective cannot step up when challenged.

No need to do a deep dive into Q2 - we've all seen that movie plenty of times since the 2021 GF, it's had more sequels than Police Academy.

They definitely did. Treacy was playing deepest in the first quarter, I can only assume to drag Lobb away and expose Buss and JOD. Voss was playing higher. I noticed as I really rate Treacy as that high forward and was trying to work out what was going on. Then after quarter time they went back to him up high. Their coach has some tricks.

I’d value you taking a look at it Merantau and appreciate your effort. The micro of play by play does tell us things, for example while we might say “the defence and defensive game plan are no good” ..identifying it in practice is helpful… is it just wrong positioning, is the problem being unable to pressure the delivery upstream, lack of understanding of individual roles and connection (JOD for example has an unfortunate trend of spoiling his teammate and choosing the wrong moment to leave his man) ? so I reckon it would be interesting…IF your mental health can stand it.

I managed to get an appointment with my mental health therapist late this afternoon. I'll have to be consult her as to advisability of re-living such recent trauma.

I thought without ball in hand it was our best quarter for the year.
