I want what I have not got (an exercise).

I was reading those articles that 'The ' have been doing about the status of 'every player' on a clubs list and I thought:

    - What if we could have one 'good average player' from every side in the AFL to choose from...so say their 'top 5' are off limits and the last 2-3 years of draftees are off limits - but you can have a crack at anyone else you want? My idea was to try and pick guys on the fringes who 'in theory' could be recruited...oh - and they have to be able to play at least 5-more seasons...I'm not signing players up for their pension fund. I know guys like Vlastuin have value but without knowing what they're thinking Im gonna assume their hunting cheques not flags!

    Here goes:

    Adelaide:
I choose BEN KEAYS. Tough. Desperate. Half forward who can both kick goals and apply pressure. Plays the game with desperation and enthusiasm. Sign me up.

    Brisbane:
I choose DARCY WILMOT. Hard as defend first defender. Can lock down but will attack if/when the game opens up. Sure of hands and sure of tackling! Let's have ourselves some of that.

    Carlton:
I kind of feel the ones I want I'm ineligible to take...

    Collingwood:
I want to say the half-forward version of Pat Lipinski! They get pretty old pretty quick so unless you're taking a Shultz...I mean, maybe Ed Allan? Ultimately I probs pass.

    Essendon:
Damn. This is HARD. They have a couple of guys I like but they are top 5 or ineligible due to recency...you actually begin to appreciate the middle of our list when you look at the last 3.

    Fremantle:
I choose BRANDON WALKER. Fallen out with Freo. Elite - ELITE runner and elite legspeed who can be a lock down defender. Just go get him.

    Geelong:
I mean, how good would Shaun Mannagh be?? I'll say MITCH KNEVITT. Runs well and kicks it pretty good. I like his inside game but he 'looks' like he could play outside...could he hold down a wing? He's only a kid - I really think he could help us.

    Gold Coast:
I choose CONOR BUDAREK. I mean - the whole ACL thing is a bit of a concern - NGL. But he has 'looked' like a player whenever on the park. I hate the idea of rehabbing someone else's injury issues (I mean, Nick Coffield, come on down) but SURELY worth a shot. MAYBE worth a shot??

    GWS:
I choose CONOR STONE. A run on Conor's! I like him - tallish (190-ish) medium defender who sticks his head over and seems to see it through. Not a great threat ball-in-hand - just seems to be a DEFENDER - but certainly one who could slot in and help.

    Hawthorn:
I genuinely hate everyone on this team.

    Melbourne:
It's like the remains of the premiership team or a bunch of kids...

    North Melbourne
I mean, I obviously want Paul Curtis but he's off the board.

    Port:
Jordan Sweet? Zak Butters? It's just too funny!

    Richmond:
Same as Melbourne but even younger.

    St Kilda
I mean - Wilkie maybe...kinda fits the criteria I suppose. Not too excited. Lot of good kids though.

    Sydney:
I want JUSTIN MCINERNEY. Can he be got? Mid forward connector, kicks goals...must be on average wages due to the Warner-Gulden-Blakey 3-headed beast up there...man he would be good for us. Just what we need.

    West Coast.
    Lols.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

Isn't Ben Keays a gun though? Does he fit this criteria?

No way is he top 5.

He's a middle of the range player at the Cows the way McInerney is at Sydney...to me those are the 'sort' of blokes we need...guys on the fringes of the top 10 in the B&F every year. Rusted on AFL players.

Thanks mjp. These types of threads are great to divert from a season that was a coulda shoulda and maybe next year….

I don’t watch enough games of other sides to contribute.

VFL watchers - are there some key tall & small defensive backs, or speedy skilful players that might also be possibilities for us? The Hawks small forward Watson clone looked ok in game against or vfl side a few weeks ago. I’m not sure if he is in draft this year or already on hawks afl list.
              Josie :)

              Our day will come
              And we'll have everything.
              We'll share the joy
              Just like '54 again.

Once again asking for the still out of contract, yet to nominate a club Judd McVee to be looked at.

I’d also love Darcy Jones from GWS. We all love Baker’s pace but imagine if we had even more of it with kicks that hit the target.

Darcy Jones has become one of my favourite players, no mean feat as I hate GWS.

He has real 'ticker', from the outside looking in I'd imagine his teammates love him. He seems the epitome of a "team first" player.

There's are a few names overall that spring to mind though.
Brody Hough from West Coast. He just seems the type to be able to be "set a task" by the coaches and then just bust his arse to do it.

I like Budarick too and genuinely think he's gettable - he's such a good team guy they're playing him as a defensive forward to get him in the side, but he's really a small defender. Had a really good pre-season too.

Windhager from the Saints - another who can stick to a task but like early Picken, I feel like there's more than just a tagger there.

Injured right now and not their no 1 defender, but I really like Jack Payne from the Lions. Big strong no nonsense defender who is a "straight line" player. Want a fast kick to switch? Look elsewhere. Want someone to stop their opponent? He's your guy.

Nguyen has heart. I like his style of play. Others are better but I hope he makes it.

Mason Wood. Plays where the team needs him and I'd love to see the "time" of his goals because it seems like they're the opposite of junk time. One hell of a pick up by St Kilda.

James Jordon is a brilliant role player at the Swans. Has been over one of their shining lights this year.

Our entire back 6 besides Bailey Dale could be better, name your club and player really, but Freo have a few good ones
Treloar & Weightman back from injury would help
I would also go for a Josh Dunkley type as a second Libba and mid sized forward
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

Adelaide - Michalanny - that mid-sized defender we could really use. Plenty of KMs left on the odometer (not gettable though because he's an SA boy)
Brisbane - Fletcher - people starting to cotton on to what a player this guy is, so balanced and can do everything well it seems (not gettable though because he's a F/S)
Carlton - Cottrell - gun team player who works up and back and takes his opportunities
Collingwood - McCreery - see above, has genuine pace plus good in the contest
Essendon - Kako - will quickly become a top 5 player for them though so not really fair game
Fremantle - Frederick - just to stop him playing against us
Geelong - De Koning - monster of a man who would be the lock down key defender we're missing
Gold Coast - Am I allowed Humphrey? Maybe not. Uwland - big body with good game sense and a big hoof
GWS - Idun - leading prototype of the tall/small defender
Hawthorn - Nash - defensive mid who seems to provide a lot of physical presence around the contest to create space for others
Melbourne - Chandler - plenty of smarts and skills, the kind of half forward you want to play through
North Melbourne - Comben - seems to have dropped off this year but has played some unreal footy against us
                            Port Adelaide - pass
Richmond - Campbell - pace kills, absolute pace kills absolutely
St Kilda - Owens - beast in contest, takes bodies, creates space, keeps his feet
                            Sydney - McCartin - SOLID
West Coast - Brockman - reckon he'd be just about breaking out right now in a better side, has some tricks
                            'And the Western suburbs erupt!'

Probably my favourite non-Bulldogs player. He is so honest and works incredibly hard both ways for his teammates, and he actually gets dangerous and can impact on the scoreboard.
