    Sam Darcy and expectations

I'm currently having a passionate argument with a Bulldogs family member over Sam Darcy.

He thinks Sam will top the Coleman medal a couple of times over the next 5 years and I'm saying that's unlikely to happen.
My reasoning against that is Sam does a decent amount of ruck work each game and if that continues it's going to put a cap on how many goals he is likely to kick.
Unless we find another ruck or use Lobby in that role Sam won't play forward enough and he will need more time on the bench.
I've looked over the top 10 goal kickers for the last 15 years and other than perhaps Joe Daniher none of the highest goal kickers rucked that much

WOOFers I'd be very interested in your thoughts?

Darcy will play a LOT of ruck over the coming five years, and be amazing at it, and he'll probably still kick fifty goals at the same time.

I'd play him in defence at times if Croft comes along further as a forward and we have adequate cover up-field. Basically, to me he shouldn't win a Coleman because he should go wherever he's needed and he's that good he can be our next Chris Grant but can also ruck.
    TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

I think we will try to use him in the ruck as little as possible. Wastes his energy, time on ground and time inside 50. Lobb and Croft (if he is ready) should do the 6 or 7 minutes of backup ruck a quarter imo. I think he will be a coleman contender for the rest of his career and the further we went in the season the less he rucked and Bevo did allude to keeping him forward for as long as possible. Still needs a few kgs on the frame as well which should come in the next few seasons.

Sam can kick 6 in a half of football.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

How lucky are we to get to watch his career.

Hard to imagine him not winning a Coleman. Bevo seems to like him forward as much as possible.

He and Naughts were both on 5 goals a game pace for a bit last season.

Will play more as a CHF I think?

Takes a mark where it is less contested 9on a lead) and is a beautiful field kick.

Down forward, he has 3 other opponents all over him, with one always having no intention of playing the ball. (Darcy is getting nowhere near the frees he deserves because the umps are fearful of having to pay a free every time it goes near him). As a result, to get the most out of him, play him up the ground a lot more.

Both Darcy and Naughton appear to be deep forwards more than genuine CHF players but they're both decent CHF.
I tend to believe that it's going to be harder for Darcy to top the Coleman because of the demands his ruck work but he can manage 50 goals plus each season and could get to 60 which gives him a chance.

I think Darcy unlocks Naughton to win a Coleman. He’s going to continue to demand the attention, double teams and interceptor roll offs.

If they both kick 50+ goals that is an outstanding return, and I’m happy to take 100 goals between them if it makes us a higher scoring side overall.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

I think it depends a bit on how Smith comes on next year , if we can get him to be the relieving ruckman , Darcy will stay forward a lot more , although he probably takes the ruck work at times in the forward line .
Smith looked really good late in the season , the penny dropped for him about where to run and it looked like his fitness improved as the year went along , he kicked goals and his marking improved .
If the club can get around 10 games out of Smith next year it will really help not only Darcy , but also English , that way Lobb stays back Darcy stays forward and English gets the help in the ruck he needs Darcy staying forward more he will give the coleman a shake , like uninformed just said Darcy was on 5 goals a game pace and the longer he stays forward the more thoes numbers will be repeated, in fact there will be games in the next 4 or 5 years when he has his 7 or 8 goal games , and he is only going to get stronger and stronger , he will for a few years be a night mare for defenders .

                      Interesting Jasper

                      I'm on team family !

I think he will too. We used him oddly at times, there was a keep him forward thing where Lobb rucked, and then we changed it back.

I think he will play mainly forward and kick 60-80 goals most years.

I think the rule is we only talk about him being any good after the draft.

What a ‘problem’ to have, we can take comfort knowing he’ll be elite whatever position he plays.
I like him full forward, seeing him ragdoll Taylor this year will be more frequent as he gets stronger.
He and Naughton will be the best KPF combo for a long time to come.
