Welcome to The Western Bulldogs - Connor Budarick

Connor Budarick is officially a Western Bulldog.

The 24-year-old has landed at the Kennel from the Gold Coast SUNS alongside Pick 70, in exchange for Pick 37 in this year’s Telstra AFL Draft, bolstering the defensive stocks of the red, white and blue.

A Queensland local who emerged from the Academy system, Budarick was pre-listed to the SUNS in 2019 and played 55 games across six seasons – including 19 this season as the club played finals for the first time.

Bulldogs Player Acquisition and Strategy Manager Michael Regan said he was thrilled to bring Budarick into the Club.

“We’re really excited to have Connor join our Club,” Regan said.

“His attributes as a small defender give us confidence he can make an immediate impact next year, playing a variety of roles in the defensive half.

“Connor has a history of being able to play on the best small forwards in the competition while providing drive from the back half.

“He has also shown versatility and been effective in multiple roles, with his speed, physicality and diligence standing out.

“Connor is fantastic character and at only 24 has the capability to continue improving as a footballer.”

The Bulldogs currently hold selections 14, 33 and 70 in next month’s Telstra AFL Draft.

    Trade details:
Bulldogs receive: Connor Budarick, Pick 70

    SUNS receive: Pick 37

It's a great get and a very reasonable price. He's a good player, we drew him to the club, and we didn't mess around with shit negotiations. Didn't want to give up our pick in the 30s, so went and got another one.

Budarick will play every game next year and finish top 10 b&f.

This also means we will get another pick for JUH , I thought for sure he would be part of the trade . JUH won’t be much but maybe enough to cover for Will Darcy .
I am very positive on Buderick, quick and strong

I’m super pumped about Conner. I feel that’s the end for JJ now.

Good deal. Didn’t really give away an awful lot either.

Welcome to the Dogs Connor. Looking forward to seeing him play and giving us a lot in that backline.

Welcome Connor. Is he our first Connor on the AFL list?

For whatever I feel about not getting in key defenders, this is very clearly the opposite scenario. a player who is competent in a role where we have a clear vacancy, who was pushed out by a preference for rebounding first defenders. Is 37 higher than is ideal? Maybe. I'm guessing we think he's worth the price if we've paid.

Nice to get a player <25 years old - we don't typically sign these types, and he's one of positional need. Hopefully has a good career with us.

Plays with an edge that few our out list has, long term target fingers crossed he can be as good as Duryea.

Seems strong and quick, and fit for a specific purpose. I view him as a Kennedy type selection albeit with less exposed form and these are the types we really need to be securing during the exchange period - especially if we can't land top end talent where picks are burned.

If we're going to spend big pick wise on draftees then incremental, fit for purpose improvement is what I want to see with whatever capital we have left to spend on recruiting. If he's a regular player for us we've done relatively well this trade period.
                          TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

The pick 70 we got back will probably be around the 50 mark in a shallow draft. So 37 to around 50 could make it more reasonable.

Which might just pay for Darcy
