Trade period done and dusted. How does our 23 shape up.
Here's my short version
B: Sellwood, JOD, Budarick
HB: Dale, Lobb, Bramble
C: Truck, Ed, Freijah
HF: West, Naughts, Kennedy
F: Cody, Darcy, Croft
R: English, Bont, Libba
IC: Adz, Sanders, Harmes, Davidson, Cleary
Emerg: Buss, Arty, Hynes
The longer version
KPD-ish?
- Lobb and JOD look locks. 22 is very young for a KPD, especially one playing cricket until recently. Main issue with the pair though is they are both much more suited to intercepting. And we have no one who is really suited to 1:1. Good times....
- The third one? I am going small here with Sellwood. I like how competitive he is. The tall option in Buss can't be sent to monsters/guns anyway.
Smaller defenders
- Budarick should give us an upgrade in our ability to defend smalls. Much has been made of our KPD issues but I think an obsession with SuperCoach scores to rate players means small defenders ability to actually defend is largely ignored.
- Dale is an elite offensive orientated HBF.
- Freijah; IDK if would work rotations playing him here as I want Bramble in the 23 as well but my theory is if you don't have guys who can defend well, maybe go with giving oppo concerns with attack. Too many players in our backline really don't worry the oppo at all. Can do wing rotations/primary play there. I think his lack of defensive pressure is a bigger issue forward than off HBF.
- Cleary; got him in as the 4th defender. Can be replaced by Buss if we want to go taller. My concerns with both is whether they are strong enough in particular areas to help impact the game or are they more there as in theory, they suit the roles needed? Look like guys who can defend and attack in VFL, maybe look like shoddy allrounders in the AFL. If they are giving us very little, I'd be tempted to double down and use another spot down back to offer a bit of drive.
Wings
- Already mentioned Freijah/Bramble, Truck another one who can play HBF/wing. I'd prefer him get some continuity on a wing though.
- Davidson developing in his Sophomore year would be great.
- Harmes can take rotations and play forward.
Inside mids and other ramblings I guess
Look I'm going with the 300% CBA game here. A lot of our fans want Garcia and Sanders, along with all the other inside mids in the side. They will get it 40x+ in the VFL if we don't pick them. But how do we share the time in the middle and what do they do outside their inside mid minutes?
- The ones I'd pick are Bont, Adz, Libba, Ed, Kennedy and Sanders.
- I think Libba is 75-ish% CBAs or he isn't in the side.
- We need at least one of Bont and Ed there. I think Ed goes a 75% and maybe Bont 50% with a bit more time forward?
- Can Adz offer us value anywhere else? If not, means Kennedy and Sanders have extremely limited CBAs. I know we love the +1 at stoppages around the ground but it's a lot of inside mids to carry if they aren't decent elsewhere. We also have Harmes and Freijah. Kennedy will be decent enough forward but I think Sanders spot is going to be a tough one if Adz only cooks when having CBAs. I see Sanders as a lability on a wing with his lack of size and defensive ability. He has goal sense but struggles to create pressure forward. If
How to best maximise the talent of this guys is a massive one for the coaching team.
Rucks
- English and R2 either Croft or Darcy
KPFs
- Naughts alongside Croft, who might be a bit of a Swiss Army Knife, and that Darcy guy.
Small forwards
- Okay having a look, my set up looks very light on for pressure forwards but I think Vanders and particularly LMN are liabilities. West our main small forward and obviously really hoping Flea is okay to play. I know he isn't very small forward but easily warrants a spot in our forward line. Arty or Hynes to come in if he isn't right.
Harmes, Kennedy and Sanders will all probably need to spend significant time forward.
I haven't got Arty as I probably don't trust him enough to offer a guaranteed base but he is the next one up if we can't work the inside mids effectively. Love Hynes too, suited to both fwd and mid.
