His position on the list for 2027 probably depends on what other changes we make, as much as on his own output. At this point, we know what we're getting with him.

Buss, Buku and Gardner all out of contract at the end of 2026. Hopefully we will add a KPD DFA this year, most likely on a one year deal. So next year we might have four key defenders out of contract. If Buku and/or Buss request a trade, then Gardy probably gets another year as security.

The other thought is that he is Tasmanian, and as a good clubman is probably the exact type of experienced head they will want in their early years.

I think Tassie will definitely come sniffing for their VFL side.

Spoil first defender, doesn’t need to be taking a heap of intercepts or getting much of the ball. Just take safe options when you do get it, Dale Morris style. Needs to make sure he is rarely beaten in one on ones given his other limitations.

I haven’t completely given up on him given we won a flag with Fletcher Roberts and successful teams often have limited, unfashionable defenders like Darcy Gardiner. Clock is certainly ticking this season though.
For me this is the big reason why we should delist him. Spoil first means the ball ends up at a 50-50 at best. We should be doing better than Gards.

Dale Morris used to be pretty handy at that. Can't win it, halve it.

For a quiet guy he is clearly one of the more polarizing players on our list.

Agree with that staement Grantysghost toally , only differance i see between Morris and Gardner is that when Gardner spoils and the ball hits the ground he leaves it to players around him to clear , where Morris with his fierce attack at the ball would be 80 / 20 his way to clear it himself , where Gardner at best would still be 50 / 50 to gather the loose ball and clear it .

He seems like a really nice guy and whatever but I never, ever, ever want to see him play AFL again (for us anyway).
