Opinion: Your favourite Bulldogs goal of the last 25 years.

Who's sick of me starting threads?

Well, here's another (it's the off season I'm bored).

I was just thinking there's been 25 years of AFL since the turn of the century (and no one correct me because of the year 0 or something) and there's been some incredible goals by our players.

We've got a few eras to choose from, the end of the Wallet years, the torturous Rhode, Eade and his high scoring legends and Bevos groundbreaking stint.

    What's your fav? Don't give me a top 5. I just want ONE !

    Ok here's mine.

It's 2021 - it's covid times. We can't go, life sucks etc etc.

This guy - not sure you've heard of him, Marcus B.

Centre clearance, B.Smith gets it out to Richards who rightfully ignores Bailey's direction to go back so the cotton on sign could be in focus (it didn't happen but lets go with it), pumps it long and Bont comes from nowhere like a lightning strike, gathers at full tilt, runs away from the goals, snaps on his left with the ball always going away from the goal face and somehow threads it through.

    LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY 15/10.

You only have to look at the reaction to realise what he just did.

Enjoy the multi call - I can watch them all without deviation.

If you went 35 years it would still be Kolyniuk against the filth

I'll allow it. Just because. Man that was some day at the footy. Puts into perspective how far we've come that that was a major moment back then. I mean it would be now, but it was almost like winning the flag back then !

        I really like that jumper.

          I was there.
What I like about that goal is also the movement of the ball from the backline. It came down so fast, and Koly put us in front with what was a tight game all day. Pies had won 9 in a row till then and went on to win the premiership.

There are many many favourite goals. This one is right up there. We ended Essendon's unbeaten record for the season.

That was my next pick - right on the cusp.

For those who weren't around then there was some context and back story to this. CG was always compared to Wayne Carey. Both insanely good players of their era. Bruce McAvaney who was the leading commentator in those days once compared a shot CG had and missed by saying Carey would've kicked it.

So there was a bit of pressure here to say the least !

Sadly it was probably the defeat Essendon needed at the time.

I cant find stand alone footage of the goal but it's at the end of these highlights. I was at the old social club at Whitten oval and I've never heard a noise like the euphoric wail when the goal review went our way. It's one of the most amazing things I've heard. The room was packed and went silent while the goal review went on and on but when it was adjudged a goal the noise travelled through the room like a wave.

BTW Huddo (where has he gone?) got his prediction spot on about marking the day down!

They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

The Dalhaus outside of the boot and the Easton karate kick on the line ! Brilliant. That was some game.
How's the desperation of the team back then.

Wood's goal was incredible, using his athleticism.

The Bont goal vs Dees at Marvel deep in pocket against boundary line when he was in his 1st or 2nd season. Not just the goal but the lead up (pressure acts etc). I haven’t seen a better goal. Must have watched it dozens of times since. Up until then the Grant goal vs Bummers (their only defeat of the year) was my fave.

Other memorables; Bont vs Weagles in Perth, Marra’s goal vs Dees from outside 50m arc, Bont’s goal vs Freo - was it this or last season?, JJ’s goal vs Sydney in 2015 and of course all the spine tingling goals in our 2016 final series.

Cordy kicking our first goal in '16 GF.
It was an expression of intent and got us rolling.

Great nomination. That was a ripper. Super tough angle & a long way out. Cordy looked like he was on a mission and the tackle to gain the free was a gem.

I'm with you josie , to be precise it was round 15 2014 at Marvel stadium , in his 2nd year and as you said , in the forward pocket ,(mind you there are 7 players around the ball 5 Demons, Bontempelli and Crameri for the Bulldogs ), a Melbourne play actually has the ball in hand and Bont slaps it out of his grasp , the ball hits the ground , it is picked up again by a Melbourne player , Bontempelli again knocks the ball out of his opponents hands , it hits the deck again and Bontempelli picks the ball up under huge pressure , now with ball in hand Bontempelli fads right then does a complete 360 degree turn and kicks right footed from the boundary line ( an impossible angle ) , the ball sails through the goals , we win by 1 goal 14-7-91 to 13-7-85.
I was sitting in that forward pocket so the goal was right in front of me , and for a 2nd year player to have that poise that balance in a crucial moment of a game and under all that pressure , to still be able to kick that goal said to me , Bontempelli was a star in the making , and what a star he has become , in my eyes that was the best goal i have ever seen kicked , some will say it was luck and sure it had a bit of that but watching it live you saw him actually look and place the ball on his foot where he thoguht it had to go to kick that goal , he was and is that good .
