What does the ladder show us?

Wins:

We were a mere 3 wins off contending for the top 4. We dropped games against GCS, Carlton, St Kilda & North all at Marvel.

Perhaps with consistency against lower/poorer sides, next year we can contend. An area we can improve no doubt.


For:

We are third for scoring. Just 43 points off Geelong and 63 points off Brisbane.

If we managed to improve our goal kicking accuracy by even 2 goals a game, we'd be 180 points higher than Brisbane this year (the only team to crack 2000 points). We pound on the pain, but there's still a lot of improvement to increase our pain giving. Hopefully the footy department spend some coin to fix this.


Against:

We are sixth last for scores against. Not great.

The questions here are whether newly acquired personnel in key position defence can help? Is it a new defensive coach with new ideas? Is it the structure and personnel further up the ground? Or something else again, or a little bit of everything?


Playing finals and with so much obvious growth to come!

It shows we have beaten the first, second and third best teams this year.
They will all be looking over their shoulders if we beat GWS.

After round 11 we were second last with 1001 points against (Melbourne worst with 1004). Ended up on 1810 so 809 conceded in the last 11 games. It's hard to tell exactly but looks like around 8th

Apparently you have to tell coaches by August if they are staying , we didn’t “delist “ any so I see no changes in coaches.

4. We lost to Collinwood by 14 and 9 points. Should have won the second time but kept missing goals.

I think it shows we had a great draw and we can mix it with most teams

We were a much more settled team in the second half of the year. As a result we became more predictable too each other which meant we could score more freely and defended better as a team.
I don’t think too many changes are required, just a tweak here and there.

We need a key back that can compete with monster forwards (who is reasonably agile).

We also had real forwards playing in the forward line.

For me, two huge changes in the second half of the season.

One was that the team was far more settled - forwards as forwards, mids as mids etc.
Secondly our defensive positioning seemed far better after the bye - and that helped limit the scores against.

Add that to young players developing more consistency as the season wore on, and Bontempelli, Dunkley and Macrae playing their absolute best footy - and the recipe was there.

It shows me that Josh Schache's final quarter from the gods against Hawthorn, and Sicily's brain fade, got us into the finals ahead of the Dawks. 30 points down 7 minutes into the last quarter, turned into a 19 point win! We can bemoan the ones we lost, but how important did those four points end up!
