If you lose when you're 4th you can play again, and get more into the legs of Treloar and Dunkley?

I'm not sure how there's an argument not to get the double chance. But I'm trying to entertain it.

Richmond lost last year in the first week for eg.

I guess you play a lesser opponent, that bit I think I'm on board with.

Not trying to be argumentative for the sake of it, I just can't understand the point around 4th or 5th doesn't matter. I guess you're saying you think we can't beat 1st or 2nd for eg which I don't subscribe to completely.

But I enjoy the discussion; thought provoking.

The point is we are still in the finals, and still a chance

Not putting it on your post, because I agree with you however it's funny how we remember things. The loss to Fremantle in the final game of the season was by twenty points in a game where it simply looked like we couldn't score. We left our best in Melbourne, missed out on the double chance and all was lost. It genuinely felt like 100 points at the time.

Some facts would be good in this situation- Before we played Fremantle it was known win, lose or draw we couldn’t move form 7th spot. It was a dead rubber and we played that way… it was also Pavlich’s last game and you could clearly see that Freo wanted to win more than we did. We played like we didn’t want to get hurt.

Or was it only a dead rubber after half time when another game went a certain way? I remember when the game started it was still live.

I'm not trying to say 5th is better than 4th.

I'm trying to say that if you are secure in the top 8 with a round remaining and have drawn a top 4 opponent in the final game of the year, there is a chance you are going to lose. As it turned out we did - by a couple of points.

Looking at it yesterday (before the game) I just figured we were in a win-win situation...if we beat Port, we finish top 4 and get an extra chance. If we didn't, don't stress...we play the 7th or 8th placed teams and should be confident of beating them.

My thought process was as simple as that. I'm anti angst when the 'outcome' is already assured (one way or the other). Playing for a spot in the 8 in the last game? Now THAT'S an uncomfortable experience.

All of this year I've been of the belief that this playing group are nowhere near their peak.

There is growth left in this list.

Don't get me wrong. I'm pissed about the last three weeks. I'm pissed about last night. I'm *!*!*!*!ing LIVID about this afternoon.

With all that said, I can see is tearing Essendon limb from limb next week.

I want us to be a wrecking ball team. We either flatten our opponent or leave them in no shape to face their next game.
