Sliding Doors - If we never traded in players with Draft Picks

2000-2021 Trades Inward To The Club ONLY - Players that we've identified and gone and secured their services:
(Excluding player-for-player trades and Draft Points Trades)

Player IN - Vs - Pick OUT (Player taken at Pick)

    Ben Harrison - Andrew Krakouer
    Steven Koops- David Mundy
    Peter Street - Sam Butler
    Adam Morgan - Luke Peel
    Jade Rawlings* - Kepler Bradley
Doogs & Aker - Eric McKenzie & Jarryd Allen
Ben Hudson & (Easton Wood Pick) - Jarrham Jacky & Myke Cook
    Barry Hall - Ryan Harwood
    Justin Sherman - Pat Karnesis
Nathan Djerrkura - N/A (rookie upgrade)
    Koby Stevens - Josh Saunders
    Tom Young - N/A (pass)
    Stew Crameri - Zach Merrett
    Sam Darley / N/A (pass)
Biggs (& Hamilton Pick) - James Rose
    Travis Cloke - Corey Lyons
Hayden Crozier - Toby Wooller & Scott Jones
Josh Schache - Sam Taylor (& De Koning and Balta to get the pick, but got back Richards Pick)
    Sam Lloyd - Fraser Turner
    Taylor Duryea - Jaxon Prior
Josh Bruce & Alex Keath - Elijah Taylor & Lachlan Gollant, Ryan Burns, 2020 Points
    Mitch Hannan - Oscar Adams
    Adam Treloar - Points

Tom Boyd was a retaliatory strike after Griffen walked so isn’t included. This list is a list of players we thought about and then went about securing Independent of our players leaving. Players we targeted to come to the club.

Essentially, the comparison is if we were a club with a hard and fast rule that we ‘develop our own talent, not trade in’.

    Special Hindsight Hero Mention:

After Stringer was traded out, we had Picks 25, 28 and 30 and all Future Picks. We then did a trade to get Schache and the pick for Ed Richards, but also gave back a future Second pick, which was Will Hamill.

If we used the picks (forgoing Schache and later Richards), the picks were (25) Noah Balta, (28) Sam Taylor and (30) Tom De Koning, (Fut 2nd) Will Hamill.

Balta up Forward or Back, Taylor at Full Back, De Koning Second Ruck and Hamill off HBF for not having Richards, would be pretty handy players. Then I imagine we wouldn't have put up two Second Rounders this year to get Lobb, and would be then investing them in the next two drafts or targeting trades for other player types such as small forwards.

Are we ahead, behind, or is it a draw? When it comes to identifying and acquiring talent on other lists.

Many traded players played in Grand Finals. So that’s a big tip in our favour. At the same time, we’ve given up some picks used on gun players. Is that just the nature of trading, ‘win some, lose some’?

      Tom Young - wow, that’s a name I haven’t thought of for years…

Just shows the draft and trading for re-treads are both hit and miss propositions.

The key is picking early enough every now and then (top 5/top 10) and having enough early selections (top 30) in the better draft years. So many factors shape the hindsight.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

I guess the point I was making is we don’t often land the big name trade that nominates us. We’ve had a few that have of course, but besides Boys who wasn’t really a proven talent we haven’t attracted the type of talent that sees us part with multiple first round picks…

You'd love this book BT. It's got chapters on the history of trading and using draft picks, has a method of weighing up one against the other called PAR (I think it's called that).

It's judgement is instead of using draft picks to trade in ordinary players clubs are far better using mid to late picks to take chances on getting youngsters into your club.

They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.
