    What makes a great coach?

4 new coaching appointments in the off season:
Adam Kingsley - Experienced Assistant coach finally gets his chance and is going to take over GWS.
Alistair Clarkson - Regarded as one of the best coaches every returns to coach North after a brief retirement.
Brad Scott - 9 years as the Senior Coach at North and a few as GM of Football role at the AFL HQ takes on Essendon.
Ross Lyon - 11 years as a Senior Coach split between St Kilda and Fremantle returns to St Kilda.

What are the qualities clubs are looking for from their senior coaches?

Communication skills would be a big part of the requirement.
Playing group - If the coach is a poor communicator they won't bring enough of the players along for the journey.
Media - Being able to manage the media particularly through the difficult patches would be a significant part of the role.
Barassi once said a coach needs to sound sensible under pressure and I think that rings true.
Internal Relationships - A coach who can manage to build and maintain a rapport right across the footy department and the board would be another important part of the role.
Clear and timely communication is an absolute requirement.

The ability to reinvent and embrace change would be another attribute a senior coach needs
The AFL is a changing environment and coaches need to accept the changes and try and work out ways to exploit that with their playing group.

Game-sense, Planning and Training would be another aspect coaches need to be good at.
Train well to play well and I would think most successful coaches would be attuned of working with the sport science team to develop training sessions that keeps the players motivated.
Forward scouting your opposition and planning to exploit or counter their strengths and weaknesses might help the more successful coaches.
During match days having the ability to read the trends of the game and make timely adjustments.

What other attributes would a coach need to impress on?

Leadership - Both on field and off field. If they can't lead there is a massive problem.

Organisational Skills - which I think is covered partly with planning and training, but there is more to it. Coach must be able to be well organised and plan the whole season from training right through to the end of season. Different venues , and different playing days playing needs to be planned for in advance to ensure the players are ready for match day.

Respect - if the coach is not respected by the playuers, the club then it is time to go

What about the ability to develop a game plan that is suited to the players on the list.
