I felt the same but the 11 goals we kicked came from just 4 players so the 3 of them were prominent.

This theory has been put out by Danny McGinlay but it is not true. He is a Catholic Celtic supporter who hates Rangers and the UK and its a rather neat idea for him.

The theory is based on the club renaming itself the Prince Imperials for a couple of seasons in honour of the Napoleon who was killed ironically helping the British fight the Zulus in 1879.

The real story for our colours is set out in the club's official history book "Unleashed". We originally had the colours blue and white with a Geelong style guernsey. However, in honour of the Footscray Rowing Club who had won three in a row Clarke Cups, the team started wearing red caps as the rowers' colours were red, white and blue.

The Victorian Rowing Association decided to bar from the competition all who did other than sedentary work due to Footscray's dominance. It is likely that the club's wearing of the red caps and later adoption of the colour red into the guernsey was about geographic and working class solidarity rather than any nationalistic thing.

The French colours are actually blue, white and red as ordered in their national flag and not red, white and blue making it further unlikely that the club thought of itself as French.

The Footscray Cricket Club has always worn red caps so I'm guessing that's from the rowers too.
