We have one list spot available so we would either sign him as a rookie or on the main list. Brew is a midfielder at the VFL level.
The problem with having a midfielder training with us is that we already have an experienced and deep midfield list with Bont, Treloar, Liberatore, Richards, M.Kennedy, Sanders, Harmes, Garcia and Gallagher so there isn't an obvious spot for him. He would provide us with some extra depth but we may not need it as much as getting some extra help with the ruck.

Have a look at his highlights on YT. He goes okay.

Thought we were linked with a ruck from the SAFL. Current recall whom though. Looks like Brew has the upper hand though in gaining selection for the final spot. Would prefer a ruck tbh.

Harry Boyd - he's training at St Kilda who have ruck stocks even thinner than ours.

That's not quite correct. There is a standard amount per rookie that is excluded from the salary cap (it was around $90k a few years back, probably more these days). So you can save a maximum of say $200k per year by having 6 rookies rather than 4. That's the extent of any savings.

If you could exclude 50% we could put Bont on the rookie list and save $500-600k per season.

I have checked it and the base ($100K) is excluded from the salary cap.

They have played around with these rules somewhat over the years.

I think they did allow 50% exemption for up to 2 veterans at one point but I believe that has disappeared.

But no, there are no circumstances you could drop someone like Bont to the rookie list, because you need to first delist the player.

Well you could, but of course someone else could draft him.

Replace Bont with Tom Lynch. Richmond could have had first pick in the rookie draft so no risk of anyone else swooping in. It was just a throw away line to demonstrate how clubs could manipulate the rookie list even more if 50% of a rookies salary was excluded.
