This thread was such a long time ago, but needed a bump after Gerard Whatley's comment tonight on AFL360. For those of you who missed it he was calling Max Gawn The People's Beard. He added that he had asked Bob Murphy if he could hand him that title !!!!

This is sacrilege!!! How dare Gerard assume he may even utter these words in the same sentence let alone give the mantle to someone else.

Bob ... Sort Whatley out ... This is not on !!!

Even if you were to consider a succession plan, you couldn't hand over a title of people's anything to a club like Melbourne, despite Max being somewhat of an anomaly on their (or potentially any) list (being public school educated)

The Ruling classes still have to communicate with their minions from time to time. If one or two of them turn out to be good at football and know which cutlery to use why not have them in the team.
