So everybody is coming up with a coaching succession plan

Grumpy Mick and Bucks, Roosy and Long John, Choco Williams and the unknown

Our lead assistant Leon Cameron seems to have been poorly received by both North and Richmond whilst participating in the process,

Does this mean Leon Cameron is our Bucks in waiting, and likely to take over from Eade at some stage?

Would people want to see this happen

Leon, Westy, Granty, Darc. Any of them want to come back to coach/take over from Rocket in three/four years, I'll be happy. Not so much if Smithy or Libba do, bless their socks.

Ps. I've always advocated for this type of succession planning anyway -- it's what the best organisations do.

As Eddie said, it's a shame how much embedded knowledge is thrown out the door with every coaching transition, and clubs have to start from scratch often, which is ridiculous (unless you're Richmond, then you want to throw everything out and start again). Mentors with experience, while maybe no longer able to come up with fresh concepts, are great guiding hands for younger executives, as I would imagine Mick would be for Bucks, or Roos for Longmire.

Im dont know a hell of a lot about Leon, he has applied for a few jobs but has had little impact at the interview level. Does anyone know the bloke and whether he is capable of being a senior coach?

Interesting to note that a lot of successful coaches are hard working players who didnt really set the world on fire with football abillity.
Matthews the exception as far as setting the world on fire but he definitely worked hard.

Malthouse, Crocker, Clarkson, Eade, Bailey, Craig, Ratten, going along those lines.

This being the case i would think of players that worked hard to make the grade rather than just say oh they were great players they must be coaching material.
I love all those players as players and characters but as far as head coaching is concerned none of them light me up.
Specialist coaches yes for sure.

PS yeah Libba certainly worked hard but he has gone from a Carlton/ Hawks seconds coach to West Footscray, and they will get relegated this year so i guess he just hasnt got the right knack.

Football supporters in general have a sentimental attachment to former players returning in some capacity.

Personally, I couldn't give a toss about that, as long as the right person takes the club forward, wouldn't worry me too much if he had or hadn't played for the club previously.

I'm not sure Alistair Clarkson would have been most Hawks fans preferred choice 5 years back.

Exactly.

Fans quickly forget whether their coach has played for their club. If they haven't and the club is going well, he will be a hero. If he has played for the club and it isn't doing well, he will be a villain.

Of those mentioned 1 is successful and 1 looks like being a successful coach. Eade whilst having some success has never gotten there, same with Craig. Crocker, Ratten and Bailey are nothings at the moment.

Whatever happened to Chris Bond? I'm not sure if Westy would be a good coach. Leon Cameron seems to be pretty good. Most of our recent champion players are far too nice to be coaches. I could picture Brad Johnson firing up as a coach though and keeping the players passionate.

I guess I was interested in whether people thought our next coach was already part of the coaching setup? i.e Leon Cameron

I have absolutely no doubt that West could make a great coach and he is one I'd definitely like to see back on the staff at some stage. But I'd also like Monty back from Carlton

Chris Bond is now Manager of Footy Operations at Freo
