Bankers and Anchors - Round 19

This is the round 17 edition of the Weekly Bankers and Anchors Thread.

    Please post your nominations for:

The Bankers = 3 players that we banked on to do the right thing during the game

The Anchors = 3 players that weighed us down by their errors or poor play

Please limit it to no more than three of each, but feel free to make honourable/dishonourable mentions. As usual try to make it constructive criticism.

The thread is named in honour of a popular WOOF Contributor, The Banker, who passed away on 22/04/2012 after a six month battle with cancer.

    Bankers:

Mitch - Super today. 29 touches and 13 tackles. Tells me he's working hard both ways. And he shut down one of the best mids (Kennedy), who was kept under 20. Super.

Grant - Another 90+ dream team points. 20 touches, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 3.0 goals and working hard all round. Just love watching him play.

Griffen - I thought about others, only because he's just so freakingly bloody good. But no, he should be captain. For me, he is starting to approach Chris Grant territory. Big call, but that's just me.

    Anchors:

Squibbing it this week. There were some quiet games, but if I had less than 15 games, I'd be upset to be labelled an 'anchor'.

      Bankers

*Griffen - Never ever stops this bloke he is a machine

      * Wallis - Did a great job on one of the AFL's leading clearance players

      * Grant - What a difference he has made to the forward line

      (Sorry for copying Bulldogtragic)

      Anchors

      * Addison - I sound like a broken record, but I can't see he adds any value to the team. Give him 10 out of 10 for trying but just can't cut it at this level.

      * Umpires - poor, pathetic -some shocking decisions resulting in goals to the Swans at the end of the third quarter and bang they gained the momentum.

      * MC for not playing Stringer and he goes and breaks his ankle in the rain and slush at VFL level.

        What? Have I missed something?

        Bankers

Griffen - no player in our side works harder.

        Cross for being Cross.

Addison - Got to a lot of right spots today and is a strong overhead mark for his size. Led well up the ground off the flanks too.

        Anchors

Minson for being in the goal square a couple of times, but in the wrong position to effect a spoil on the line. He should know better.

        Missing set shots.

Another persistent issue we have is our need to bomb it long. At one stage Addison was surrounded by five Sydney players and whoever it was just popped it up in the air to him. It might be ugly, but sometimes we need to pull up, hold it up, go backwards or sideways until something else presents.

Bulldogs twitter says he has been cleared of broken foot; further scans tomorrow. Hooray!

                Bankers:

Griff who has had a magnificent season, all the more so as he has lacked quality support for much of it.

                Murphy. Brilliant, creative, fearless.

Wallis and Grant renaissance. Great to see.

                Anchors:

Remind me again how Tippet can get to the Swans?

Umpiring of the holding the ball rule

That costly two minutes at end of 3rd quarter really hurt. Deflating after one of the best quarters I've seen us play for a while, to go in 26 points down.

                      Bankers

Mitch Wallis - Has really found his way after struggling to find his place. Fantastic effort on Kennedy today.

Jarrad Grant - Haven't been getting my hopes up on him, got to start believing after he put on his best performance.

                      Libba - ELITE!

                      Anchors

3 Quarter Redtime - So costly.

Our coaching staff - Got to start working with the players on throwing the head back, falling at the knees and just diving in general. The only way to get a free kick in modern football.

Seriously? I guess who you choose as an anchor is your business but really Addison? Thought he was terrific today and made something out of nothing on several occasions. His physical presence is a real positive.

                          Bankers:

                          Griff

                          Grant

                          Wallis + Libba

All guns (i.e I'm too lazy to go into detail).

                          Anchors:

Umpire who denied Cross a goal- pulled a free kick out of his ass in the first quarter.

Third quarter red time - Killed the game dead, last quarter was pretty low intensity (cough cooney cough)

Jude Bolton - for running off while Bob was winded.

                            Of course he was.

Mitch has come a very long way in a few weeks with his performances being lauded.

Nice summary of the game just posted up by Peter Hanlon from The Age
                              Peter Hanlon Game Summary

I was particularly struck by the bolded part, hopefully the boys (& Mitch) recognise this:

When not writing about Paul Kelly, coffee and his sausage dog, Western Bulldog minstrel and Age columnist Bob Murphy has been known to bring a smart footballer's insight to his writing. Last week he noted that good teams have lately found it harder to move the ball against his Dogs.

There was abundant further evidence of this mark of improvement on Sunday, although perhaps the most telling was missed by the Bulldogs, who couldn't see the collection of wincing, bruised and aching bodies in the winners' rooms immediately after a game that was far closer than the scoreboard indicated.

Josh Kennedy, the premier ball-winning beast in the competition's premier team, lay on his back with ice packing a hand and calf. He confessed to being ''cooked, absolutely cooked'', and he wasn't on his own.

Down the corridor Mitch Wallis was vomiting, his immediate reward for restricting Kennedy to 18 touches while racking up 29 of his own and laying a dozen tackles.

''I think it was the story of the day - the pressure they applied, I just felt like I had no room to move,'' Kennedy observed.
