Why just the one for Murphy? Is it because he relies so much on his pace and evasion skills, which traditional has left players very very quickly.

Yep. I want nothing more than apologise for every doubt i've ever had with Ayce. I want him to prove me wrong, but like others, we've seen many talls fail to make the grade and it seems a little dejavu.

It's mainly his age and as you say the fact that he relies on his pace that could drop off. A 2 year deal is more than okay if we are confident he isn't carrying injuries etc.

I may be off but I've felt his contributions have started to ease off this year. He's still be good and an important part of the backline but I've just felt we aren't seeing as many dashing runs or precision passes.

Edit- I'm probably wrong, looking back over his stats for the year they match up almost exactly with his stats the last few seasons. Averaging 20 disposals a game at about 85% efficiency which is about his norm for Bobby

Hawthorn only give one year for players over 30. I like that approach.

Do they? I know Adelaide started that trend (how we got the beard) but I hadn't heard of Hawthorn doing it. But it isn't surprising more clubs are following suit.

Hawthorn have had this philosophy for a long time and even guys like Crawford were pissed off when contract time came up.

Players just don't realise how quickly their body deteriorates after 30. I know Essendons Fletcher is still going but that isnot the norm. How many players went down hill in their 30's and we kept them on. Think about it.

Hey BAD, not disagreeing at all, what so ever. It is a fine line between showing a club champion respect they deserve and transitioning the list correctly.

Yes its a hard one. Scott West is a good example. He wanted to play on but Rocket had to tell him he was near the end.

Something that has been discussed previously is can we afford all of Boyd, Murphy, Morris, Gia all leave at the same time.

Do Gia and one other need to go at the end of 2014?

                            Gia end 2014
Boyd & Murphy end of 2015
                            Morris end of 2016.

It isn't an exact science, but it would be really interesting to see what JMAC currently thinks our list will look like from 2015 and beyond in terms of the older guys including Cooney and Minson.

Make Higgins play the full year before offering the next contract.

It amazes me how often players string a few good performances together when the contract is being negotiated.
