How the swarm was swamped by a Saints surge

    By The Opposition Analyst

Creative coaching by Chris Scott and Alan Richardson brought unlikely Geelong and St Kilda wins last weekend. A 62-point turnaround between the Saints and Western Bulldogs, in particular, points to tactical changes made in the Saints' box, and what the Dogs might have done to counter them.

In the first half the Bulldogs brought their 2015 style of "swarming pressure" from all angles that is reminiscent of the Sydney Swans. St Kilda was the deer in the headlights, the Dogs forcing the Saints defenders to either try to handball their way through the pressing forwards, or try to switch it to the open side in search of an escape. Both methods were fruitless, and eventually the Saints turned it over.

Interesting that the 2 tactical moves suggested were very similar to what I was saying at the game.

    1. Get Bont on Roo

Marcus was having an ordinary game by his high standards, and the move of Roo to the wing gave us a match up problem.

    2. Shift T Boyd to be the plus 1 in the back line.

After a bright start, Delaney was all over Tom, and our backline was under siege...we desperately needed another mobile tall down there, and with Stringer and Crameri not up to it, Boyd was the obvious one to give Talia, Roberts and Roughie a chop out.

Not sure if their tactical moves were the turning point, or playing a beat up side with only two on the Pine.
We'll gain valuable lessons out of last Sunday, and I think playing a bit of tempo might be one of them .
Even late in the second term would have been a good start .

              What a lot of rubbish.

Two rotations down, in effect, hampered our ability to compete one on one at stoppages and it was due to some lax coaching across the board and the mentality of the playing group that rendered us non-competitive.

Last week was the first chink in the armour of our coaching team. They either couldn't or didn't want to react to the change in circumstances from a resources perspective and they got burned in the process.

              Hopefully they'll learn from it.

Pretty obvious move having Riewoldt as a wing mid type, as in a developing side they need to find longer targets .

Do you think that move unbalanced us?
