Dogs reveal ideal foes for Ballarat debut

    Link

THE WESTERN Bulldogs hope to play either Adelaide or Greater Western Sydney in its first game for premiership points at Eureka Stadium in Ballarat.

The club will ask the AFL to schedule the game late in the 2017 season to ensure the stadium is in perfect shape for the historic encounter.

Bulldogs president Peter Gordon told AFL.com.au he hoped the five-year agreement between the club, the AFL and the state government to play games in Ballarat would turn into a 100-year commitment.

The club will play one AFL game at the stadium in 2017 and two games a season in the following years.

Gordon said anticipation was building for the game.

"That demand for the first game in particular might significantly exceed supply," Gordon said.

"If the opponent is Adelaide, for example, we would be hoping to get people driving from Adelaide and increasing the tourist return for Ballarat. We would be hoping for a strong local interest from the people in Ballarat and we would be hoping for our own supporters from Melbourne to turn up.

"That might produce a result where there is 13,000 [spectators] inside and 30,000 outside."

The Western Bulldogs have employed former player Brett Goodes in their Ballarat office and are represented on several committees relating to the upgrade of Eureka Stadium, which is renowned for having one of the best surfaces for football in the state.

Gordon said the initial redevelopment was just the beginning for what he described as an exciting venture.

"The government understands that if it works as well as we all think it will, there needs to be a phase two to the construction of the stadium," Gordon said.

"The capacity of the stadium is going to need to increase."

But until that upgrade happens, Gordon said the Bulldogs were focused on making sure their current members weren't disadvantaged in any way.

"We need to ensure in our membership offerings for next year everyone understands what they are getting," he said.

"To the extent that we may not able to accommodate every member and every reserve seat holder for the Ballarat game, we must get an adequate replacement game at Etihad Stadium," Gordon said.

He said playing an AFL game in Ballarat was a great opportunity for the Western Bulldogs.

"When you think about it, it is probably going to be one of the hottest tickets in town," Gordon said.

Prefer GCS to be honest - they'd freeze playing Ballarat in late winter, gives us a decided advantage

Why not get the temporary grand stands after the Grand Prix is finished? We need as many people watching the game for this to be a 100 year deal. Kerry Packer didn't sell Day/Night cricket to Sydney & Australia (which is a real 100+ year deal) by saying at the SCG, 'leave the bloody gates shut, they can see a game in future years if they book early'.

Yeah. It's got a touch of "I'm right Jack" about it. Spouting what a great idea it is to make it virtually impossible to see your own team and let the locals experience the AFEL as well when he wont be scrambling for entry with everyone else isn't very politic.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

What else can the club do?

Why should the State Government spend millions with a chance its all a dud? ( I don't think it will be, but just trying to think like a state government)

The Government wants to justify the spend, so lets fill the stadium, and put pressure on Daniel Andrews to build Ballarat a bigger and better stadium. It also needs to be multi use, as hosting two AFEL games a year it will be a big waste of money.

Was good that Peter was saying that members need to be decently compensated with a replacement game at Etihad as a result.

40 000 want to get in but only 13 000 will.

If we play there in the deep winter many won't of our fans who live in Melbourne won't go but more likely if its earlier in the year or later in the year. Capacity seems to be an issue now as we have more and more members than we used to.

Exactly. Alternatively, we can get the season average of 30,000 at Etihad or make more money by locking out 27,000 at Ballarat.

Once the AFL buy out Etihad hopefully then will finally be able to secure a good deal and make a profit from there.

To me they should be either in or out but a 13,000 is at best just half in.

It won't be a white elephant because a large regional town like Ballarat can use a good stadium 12 months of the year.

For the sake of building it for 16,000 now I doubt it would have been a massive increase in cost.

How many chances do they need to make a first good impression?

I don't quite believe that PG really thinks Adelaide is a good fit in a stadium that holds 13,000 for a game between 2 top sides. I guess he has to talk it up but to me GWS, Brisbane and GC should be about the limit of teams to play there until it's set-up right.

West Coke would be ideal for this game as an opponent.
Can you imagine how many Coke fans would come over for that flight.
