Former Western Bulldogs captain and best and fairest winner Luke Darcy has been added to the Club’s Board of Directors.
Darcy fills the remaining spot on the Bulldogs’ Board after the retirement of Football Director Matthew Croft late last year and will have responsibility for overseeing governance of the Club’s Football programs.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Luke as a Bulldogs Director, and look forward to his valuable insights,” said Club President Peter Gordon.
“Luke will bring a range of important attributes as a Board member - his extensive experience as a player, his credentials as a media performer over a long period of time, and his passion for the Club.
“We are fortunate to have a strong and diverse range of skills represented through our current Directors, which will help us navigate through this difficult period and forge ahead into the future.
“Luke’s experience and insight will be particularly important as we confront the inevitable changes our football operations will face in these uncertain and complex times.
Darcy put together a brilliant playing career in the red, white and blue, amassing 226 games and kicking 183 goals over 14 seasons from 1994 until 2007.
He won the Charles Sutton Medal in 2001, in 2002 he was named All-Australian and tied for the Leigh Matthews Trophy, and he captained the Club in 2005 and 2006.
Since his retirement, Darcy has become a talented and highly-respected media performer across TV and radio mediums.
He first began at Network 10 as a member of its football and netball coverage, switching to the Seven Network when it won the rights to broadcast AFL, where he has excelled as a commentator and program host.
Darcy has also been a mainstay on Triple M radio on its match coverage, and he is currently a co-host of the Hot Breakfast morning show alongside Eddie McGuire.
“I’m extremely honoured and humbled to officially join the Western Bulldogs’ Board of Directors,” Darcy said.
“This is a great opportunity for me to give back to a Club which has provided so much to me over the years, and to contribute wherever I can in what are extremely difficult times for everyone.
“Watching from afar, I’ve been proud to observe the Club’s ability to build a strong financial base and give back so selflessly to the community it represents, and I’m excited to be part of a Board which can build on that solid foundation.”
The Western Bulldogs have made several changes to its board over the last 12 months, welcoming Lisa Fitzpatrick, Belinda Duarte and Simon Garlick (who later relinquished his position after accepting the role as CEO of the Fremantle Football Club).
