    Sand is generally associated with a beach holiday, but this pre-season has been no vacation for the Western Bulldogs.

    The players have been testing themselves this summer by using the club's latest fitness tool at Whitten Oval - a purpose-built sand pit.

    Fitness chief Bill Davoren had the pit installed over the off-season for use in the players' core development program and to add spice to the training mix.

    "One of the big challenges with pre-season is keeping the interest and variety," Davoren, a former national triathlon coach, said.

    "Sand is something that has been used for decades in athlete development.

    When I went to watch training prior to Christmas, Shaun Higgins was in there for quite some time.

          Fair play to help the guy in his quest to get fit for the paralympics, but this is taking it a little too far.
