Re-signing Jarrod Harbrow a priority for Western Bulldogs

    * Mark Stevens

TALKS between the Western Bulldogs and Jarrod Harbrow's management are continuing as the club tries to strike a deal to keep the Gold Coast target.

Harbrow, out of contract at season's end, has emerged as an A-grade player and the Dogs are treating negotiations accordingly.

'Under AFL rules, Gold Coast can take only one uncontracted player from each club. The league has made it clear there is no loophole that allows two players to leave.'

So they can't sign one player and then take another player from the same club at pick one in the PSD?
    The curse is dead.

PSD or National Draft, can't see why not.

I don't think it is pointless. I have a feeling that the real reason for the article is to exert some pressure on Harbrow, whether its ultimately successful obviously remains to be seen.

            Of course they can.

The AFL have made a mess of the rules again and are trying to use my mum's "don't do what I said, do what I mean!" defense.

I think i'll cry regardless of whether he stays or goes.

Does anyone know whether they sat down with him at the end of last season and a had a red hot crack at a new deal?

With the emphasis on re-signing Lake & then having to squeeze Aker & Eagle in, there would have been bugger all left in the cap this year to offer him anyway I would have thought.

Certainly a positive sign that his Management are talking to the club.

I note today that Clayton is suggesting they may have to trade Priority Draft Picks to win players.

Where would we stand if they offered their Number 1 Draft Pick for Harbrow.

                  Is Harbrow worth a Scully?

I reckon we'd stand pretty good. Unlikely it'd ever happen, but Pick 1 for a bloke we got as a rookie after only really 1.5 great seasons on the field would be jumped at. Unlikely Pick 1 would be around, might be used for a bloke further down the Hwy.

They have said they won't use their top 10 picks but they have a couple in the 11-15 range. That would be as good as we could hope - and well under the money.

Do you mean it was set up by the Bulldogs. If so I can see a point, otherwise it is just filling up a paper.

Dunno whether by the club or the journo (who just happens to be a very passionate Bulldog's supporter), but most of what's in the papers just fills up space.

GC have committed a year out to David Swallow with their #1 pick and moved him across the other side of the country just so that he could get used to playing in the team this year in preparation for being drafted at the end of this year so there is, in my opinion, absolutely no chance that they'll part with the #1 pick.

In any case, the only way they'd trade for Harbrow would be if we came to an arragement with him in order to get a pick higher than the compensation pick would be and given the flexibility that comes with the compensation pick, the pick GC would need to offer for a then under contract Harbow would probably have to be at least half a round better than the likely compensation pick. In this case, I suspect that would be something like pick #8 or #10.
