I don't think the hours of work that G put into getting this site up and running was so that people could just write hateful rants that don't add anything to any discussion.

Well its certainly added to the discussion of what we think of the reporter who wrote it.
Maybe a new thread should be started on reporters who are regarded as good or bad journalists.
